Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Acute Care - Medical Surgical Duration: 18 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 1 year License: Active Illinois RN License Certifications: BLS Certification Must-Have: Ability to perform IV starts Description: The unit consists of 29 beds. The typical census ranges from 22 to 26 patients, with a target census of 25. The unit includes a mix of private and semi-private rooms. Patient-to-nurse ratios are 4-5:1 during the day and 5-6:1 at night. The unit handles a diverse range of medical diagnoses, including GI bleeds, sepsis, cellulitis, congestive heart failure, COVID-19, comfort measures, osteomyelitis, and deep vein thrombosis. Nurses are required to titrate heparin drips only. There is 24-hour charge nurse coverage, with the goal for the charge nurse to be free from patient assignments. A crisis RN is also present 24/7, along with an administrative supervisor as a resource. Patient care technicians are present on the unit with a ratio of 1:10. Patients may have oxygen requirements up to 6L via nasal cannula or stable CPAP/BiPAP at night or as needed. Telemetry patients are monitored remotely by a separate telemetry department. The unit is equipped with Phillips telemetry monitors. Shift reports are conducted at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Weekend shifts require every other weekend commitment. Holidays are rotated among staff. Travel RNs will float to other medical/surgical units as needed, but not to ICUs or chemotherapy patients. Staff are responsible for providing their own scrubs in any color, excluding pediatric scrubs.
