Salary: $61,911.00 - $95,464.00 AnnuallyLocation : All Elementary Schools, VAJob Type: Full TimeJob Number: 03879Department: Reading SpecialistOpening Date: 01/21/2026Closing Date: 8/1/2026 11:59 PM EasternDescription** This posting is intended to generate a pool of qualified applicants who wish to be considered for vacancies as they develop for the 2026-2027 school year**General Responsibilities:To provide support to teachers with the implementation of the language arts program in HCPS elementary schools; provide professional learning in all areas of literacy; share deep knowledge of literacy research and resources with administrators, teachers and parents; collaboration with teachers in planning, modeling best practices, and coordinating school-wide and division-level literacy initiatives; and provide support for reading intervention.Essential Duties:(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)Collaborate with principals and reading specialists to implement the division literacy plan and goals of the school.Collaborate with principals and reading specialists in developing and coordinating the reading and writing programs.Provide leadership for school and district-level reading and writing programs; collaborate with other literacy leaders to develop and effectively implement the elementary school language arts curriculum.Monitor and assess students' reading achievement progress. Use data to determine student strengths and weaknesses as well as next steps for instruction.Provide in-class coaching (reading and writing strategies/testing/assessment) for students and teachers to improve reading instruction and assessment.Provide professional learning and coaching for teachers and building-level personnel on best practices and quality literacy programs across all content areas.Support individual teachers and teams in implementation of evidence based instruction approaches to improve reading and writing achievement.Collaborate and plan with teachers by participating in team and departmental meetings.Serve as a resource and coach for teachers in the areas of reading and writing for teachers, administrators, and the community.Provide literacy research and resources for administrators, teachers, and parents.Develop literacy resource materials and assist in establishing a curriculum for classrooms and the school language arts department.Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other professionals in planning programs to meet the needs of diverse populations of learners.Assist the principal and other members of the leadership team to offer professional development opportunities for teachers which may include: team coaching, modeling effective teaching techniques and learning strategies, formative assessment strategies, conferencing, and data analysis.Assist the principal and collaborate with teachers to analyze data and formulate plans to improve student literacy.Assist the principal in providing ongoing meetings within the corridor schools for enhancing communication and establishing smooth transitions among grade levels for students.Maintain an active professional learning life and demonstrate a desire to remain a life-long learnerQualifications: KSA's, EducationKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:Must have at least three years successful experience as a classroom teacher or reading specialist. Demonstrated excellence as a classroom teacher and teaching experience at the elementary level; in-depth knowledge of reading and writing processes, acquisition, assessment and instruction at the elementary level; and expertise in collaborating with teachers to improve their practices. Experience observing and modeling in classrooms along with providing feedback to teachers, working collaboratively with teachers and school administrators, and working with teachers to improve their literacy practices. Experience in delivery of high quality professional learning to a variety of audiences. Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills.Education and Experience:Licensure Required: Postgraduate Professional License (Reading Specialist endorsement preferred)Education Required: Master's degree.Experience Required: At least three years of recent, successful experience as a classroom teacher, as a reading specialist, or in an environment that emphasizes reading.Candidates that do not meet the minimum qualifications at this time may be considered for this role and, if selected, will be required to attain them within a specified amount of time.Terms of EmploymentJob Title: Literacy Coach (Elementary School)Location: As AssignedWork Schedule: 7.25 hours/day, 11 months (239 days)Immediate Supervisor: PrincipalPayscale: TeacherSpecial Requirements: NoneFLSA Status: ExemptPhysical requirements and DisclaimerPhysical Conditions:Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact, including vision and hearing. Must have the ability to manipulate or handle controls, objects and other materials including the ability to reach with hands and arms. Frequent contact with teachers, school staff, students, parents and the general public is required. May be required to travel throughout the County.
