Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)Specialty: Clinical Laboratory Science / Medical Laboratory SciencePlace of Work (City/State): Toppenish, WASite: Yakama Service Unit — Portland Area Indian Health Service (IHS)Location: 401 Buster Road, Toppenish, WA 98948Duration: 6-Month contract + 6-Month Option PeriodShift Schedule: Day Shift Only, M-F, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, 8 hours per day / 40 hours per week maximumHow Many Shifts Needed Per Month: Approximately 20–22 shifts per month (Monday–Friday, excluding federal holidays and authorized closures)Credentialing / Onboarding Time: 6 to 8 weeksLicense: Current and valid Medical Laboratory Technician / Medical Technologist / Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) certification or license from a nationally recognized credentialing agency OR state licensing body — any qualifying state license acceptedCertifications Active MLS/MT/CLS certification from one of the following nationally recognized credentialing bodies:American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) — MLS(ASCP) or MT(ASCP)American Medical Technologists (AMT) — MT(AMT)National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) — CLS(NCA)OR equivalent state-issued licensureBLS CertificationEducationBachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related field — as required to meet national credentialing agency or state licensing body standards for MLS/MT/CLS certificationExperience Needed: Minimum 1 (one) year of experience working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a clinical laboratory settingSpecial Skills NeededDiagnostic testing proficiency: chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, serology, and microbiologyLaboratory equipment operation, quality control, and calibrationPhlebotomy and specimen collection, handling, and processingEHR documentation — RPMS experience preferred (Government orientation provided)Knowledge of CLIA, COLA, OSHA, HIPAA, and biosafety/infection control standardsCritical result communication and professional clinical judgmentInventory management and regulatory compliance supportStrong patient-facing communication and customer service skillsResponsibilitiesPerform and interpret diagnostic laboratory tests in a moderate complexity outpatient settingOperate analyzers and equipment; conduct quality control and calibrationPerform phlebotomy and specimen collection, handling, and processingDocument results and patient information in EHR/RPMSCommunicate critical results to healthcare providers per applicable proceduresMaintain biosafety, infection control, and regulatory compliance standardsManage inventory; support inspections, audits, and compliance activitiesComplete required IHS training, competency assessments, and department meetingsComply with HIPAA, Privacy Act, credentialing, background, and Public Law 101-630 requirementsSubmit all post-award documentation within 10 days of awardMaintain accurate daily timekeeping per IHS requirements
