Nursing Assistant (Mental Health)

This Nursing Assistant (NA) position is located in the Inpatient (8 East) Mental Health service line at the West Haven VA Medical Center. The NA is directed by a Registered Nurse and performs clinical procedures, technical procedures, and ancillary services. The NA helps each patient attain optimal physical, physiological, emotional, and social well-being.Major duties include but are not limited to:Participates in the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.Prepares patient care rooms for admissions or transfers, and assists with removing patient specific items from the room at discharge.Performs assigned technical procedures, such as blood glucose monitoring and quality controls, EKG's, taking and recording vital signs, and collecting specimens.Provides care for behavioral ill patients, restraint monitoring, safety monitoring and require routine physical checks.Provides care to acutely ill patients including baths, personal hygiene, nutrition/feeding, elimination, intake and output.Supports and assists patient with turning, moving, or transferring from bed to chair, commode etc.Assists the physician or RN with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.Provides assistance with transporting patients that are not critically ill independently from tests, procedures and appointments.Observes patient and reports physical and emotional reactions.Work Schedule: Rotating days and evenings, rotating weekends and holidays. Schedules may be adjusted to support facility needs.Functional Statement #: To be determined at the time of selection based on grade.Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year).Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).
