Senior Embedded Software Security Engineer
Overview
In this role you will advance the security of mission-critical embedded systems. You’ll work in a technically deep, mission-focused environment to design secure software and hardware interfaces, prototype trusted computing solutions, and assess resilience against hardware-enabled attacks. You will collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to deliver secure-by-design embedded platforms and provide actionable guidance to sponsors. ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop secure embedded software and firmware for mission-critical systemsArchitect and implement trusted computing technologies including secure boot, firmware signing, cryptographic roots of trust, and secure key managementDevelop tooling and infrastructure for secure-by-construction embedded systems (static analysis, symbolic analysis, compiler-assisted protections)Prototype and evaluate security capabilities across bare-metal, RTOS, embedded Linux, FPGA SoC, and heterogeneous platformsAssess embedded systems for hardware-enabled attacks (side-channel, fault injection) and develop software mitigationsCollaborate with multidisciplinary teams on embedded security research, vulnerability assessment, and hardware/software co-designDeliver prototypes, technical recommendations, and engineering support to sponsorsSupport development of embedded security requirements, acquisition guidance, and best practicesCommunicate technical approaches, risks, and results to sponsors and stakeholdersProvide technical mentorship to junior engineers
Key requirements5 years with a bachelor’s degree; or 3 years with a master; or PhD with relevant experienceU.S. citizenship and ability to obtain Secret clearanceExperience developing embedded software in C/C++ and tooling in PythonLow-level embedded software development (bare-metal, RTOS, embedded Linux, device drivers)Familiarity with embedded system debugging workflows and development toolsUnderstanding of secure boot, cryptographic integration, key management, trusted computing, and secure software architectureKnowledge of how hardware and computer architecture influence embedded system securityAbility to work independently in collaborative environmentsEffective oral and written communication skillsHybrid on-site work requirement (minimum 50%)effective communicationteam collaborationmentoringC/C++ programmingPython toolingbare-metal/RTOS/embedded Linux development
