Tax Partner State and Local Tax (SALT)

Job Description Role SummaryOur client, a well-established and highly profitable regional CPA firm, is seeking a direct-entry Tax Partner to lead and expand its State and Local Tax (SALT) practice in California. This role requires deep subject matter expertise in California state and local tax regulations and offers significant profit-sharing potential within a collaborative partnership structure.The selected candidate may be based in one of several California offices and will work a hybrid schedule. This opportunity offers strong work-life balance, leadership influence, and long-term growth within an established firm.Key ResponsibilitiesProvide technical review and approval of complex income, franchise, gross receipts, and sales tax returnsLead and manage state and local tax examinations; represent clients before taxing authorities as neededServe as a subject matter expert in California SALT regulations; sales and use tax expertise strongly preferredAdvise clients independently on advanced SALT matters and planning strategiesDrive business development initiatives related to SALT services and maintain an active role in market expansionOversee and delegate complex tax research projects to ensure accuracy and efficiencyManage client engagements to meet budget, timeline, and profitability targetsSupervise, mentor, and develop SALT professionals, including recruiting, performance management, and trainingParticipate in firm leadership activities, including quality control initiatives and practice development effortsCollaborate closely with federal tax partners and other firm leadershipMonitor legislative and regulatory developments impacting state and local taxationRequired Qualifications10–15+ years of progressive public accounting experience with increasing leadership responsibilityDemonstrated expertise in California state and local tax regulationsProven record of managing complex SALT engagements and governmental tax examinationsStrong business development history in SALT-related servicesBachelor's or Master's degree in AccountingActive and valid CPA or JD requiredCompletion of at least 40 hours of continuing professional education annuallyDemonstrated leadership in staff development, engagement management, and firm operationsCompensation & Work ModelBase compensation range: $200,000 – $300,000 annually, commensurate with experienceDirect-entry partnership with high profit-sharing potentialLarge bonus potential5% employer contribution to 401(k)Full benefits packageHybrid work scheduleRelocation assistance availableDirect hire opportunity
