Matern Staffing is hiring a Chief Operations Officer (COO) for a nonprofit organization in Fredericksburg, VA. As COO, this role requires an experienced executive with a proven ability to lead complex, frontline, day-to-day operations through a strong, people-centered leadership approach.This role is responsible for building and orchestrating the operational backbone of the organization’s primary, customer-facing revenue-generating activities in support of its mission. Through a deep understanding of operations, strategy, systems, data, and people, the COO ensures business functions run efficiently and effectively to drive growth, productivity, and long-term success. By aligning strategic planning with data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement, the COO creates the conditions necessary for sustainable expansion across platforms, services, and markets.Salary:$125,000 - $160,000Benefits:Company vehicle11 paid holidaysPTO with flexible schedulingCareer development403B retirement savings planMedical, dental and visionEmployee rewards and discountsshort & long-term disabilityHSA & FSAWhat You’ll Do:Enterprise Operations & Supply Chain:Provide executive leadership over all donation and retail operations, including Retail Stores, Donation Centers, E-Commerce, Warehousing, Transportation, Facilities, After-Market & Salvage, and related operational functionsEnsure efficient, integrated, and high-quality day-to-day operations by establishing strong workflows, performance standards, and quality assurance processesLead supply chain optimization and donation acquisition strategies to ensure timely, cost-effective sourcing and distribution of goodsFinancial Management:Prepare and manage the annual operating budget; monitor financial performance to ensure fiscal health, sustainability, and operational accountabilityDevelop and maintain financial models and forecasts to support decision-making, operational planning, and long-term viabilityOptimize operational expenses and resource allocation by reducing inefficiencies, controlling costs, and improving productivityStrategy & Growth:Partner with executive leadership to support organizational strategy, business development, and operational scaling aligned with growth objectivesIdentify and evaluate new market opportunities and potential revenue diversification initiativesDrive continuous improvement by recommending and implementing new tools, systems, and processes that enhance efficiency and scalabilityCustomer Experience & Partnerships:Enhance donor and customer experiences across donation, in-store, and online channels by ensuring consistency, excellence, and continuous process improvementBuild and maintain strong relationships with key customers, partners, and community stakeholdersRepresent the organization externally through partnerships, community engagement, presentations, conferences, and Board of Directors meetingsMission, Compliance & Safety:Demonstrate a visible commitment to the nonprofit’s mission and ensure operations align with serving individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employmentEnsure compliance with all State, Federal, and local regulations, including required certifications as a provider of services to the disabled and disadvantagedOversee workplace safety, ensuring safe environments and adherence to all safety procedures and equipment operating standardsWhat You’ll Need:Bachelor’s degree preferred10+ years of progressive operational leadership with experience in retail or logistics preferredStrong project management, supply chain, and logistics expertise, including workflow optimizationAdvanced financial acumen with the ability to analyze performance data and manage operational budgetsProven ability to assess future operational needs using data, critical thinking, and sound judgmentClear, concise communication skills and a collaborative leadership styleA strong customer-centric mindset focused on improving donor, shopper, and partner experiencesAbout our Client: Our client is an innovative and sustainable nonprofit organization that generates funding for job training programs, employment placement services, and other community-based initiatives by selling donated clothing and household items through 17 regional retail stores, 6 independent donation centers, and e-commerce platforms.About Matern Staffing: For over 55 years Matern Staffing has built relationships with businesses and job seekers to provide staffing solutions and job opportunities across the mid-Atlantic region.
