Based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with over 270 employees, Brooks Construction provides asphalt, concrete, earthwork, and pipe operations across northern Indiana and northwestern Ohio using best practices and innovative techniques to give our customers a quality product.Job SummaryThe Survey Crew Chief works closely with the survey, engineering, and operations teams to perform field surveying services for private, commercial, and public projects. Responsibilities include boundary, topographic, and ALTA/NSPS surveys; construction staking; elevation certificates; and recorded document research. The Survey Crew Chief is adaptable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment while transitioning between projects.Essential Job Duties/ResponsibilitiesPerforms field collection of boundary survey data under the supervision of a Professional SurveyorCollects topographic survey dataPerforms construction staking and related calculations for private, commercial, and government projectsUtilizes AutoCAD and Trimble Business CenterCollects, downloads, and manages survey dataCoordinates with project superintendents and foremen to resolve discrepancies in drawings, staking, and site conditionsOperates a company vehicle and maintains a valid driver's licenseStays current on surveying technology, equipment, and best practicesExercises discretion regarding project confidentialityOther Duties/Responsibilities* Assists others in department as needed* Performs other related duties as assignedRequired Skills and AbilitiesDemonstrates proven experience with modern surveying technology (GPS, Robotic Total Station, Data Collectors)Displays strong understanding of surveying softwareAbility to work independently and collaboratively under pressureExhibits excellent communication skills across all levels of the organizationAbility to read and interpret construction plans and identify discrepanciesStrong data collection, analysis, and field documentation skillsSolid math skills, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometryStrong decision-making and problem-solving abilitiesAbility to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlinesMaintains acceptable attendance, punctuality, reliability, and work ethicAbility to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours when neededComplies with company Drug-Free & Alcohol-Free Workplace policiesAbility to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as requiredAbility to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervisionEducation and ExperienceAssociate's or Technical degree in Surveying, CAD, Construction, Engineering, or a related field (preferred)3+ years of experience in the construction industry; heavy highway experience preferredSurvey Technician Certification or willingness to obtain certificationProfessional Surveyor licensure (or eligibility) is a plusProficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and OutlookPhysical RequirementsLifting/Carrying: Up to 50 lbs frequentlyPushing/Pulling: Up to 50 lbs frequentlyDriving: Regular driving of automatic and possibly standard transmission vehiclesMovement Requirements: Frequent standing, walking, and keyboarding; occasional sitting, bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, climbing, crawling, and reaching above shoulder levelUse of Hands: Frequent use of hands for keyboarding and handling materialsWorking EnvironmentIndividual will be working in a field and office environment (85/15), with a primary emphasis on survey related field work.Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, dust, wet surfaces, uneven terrain, and standing on concreteWorks long hours and potentially 6 days a week, with the understanding nights could be neededTravels up to 90-mile radius from the main officeInteraction with internal departments (e.g., Safety, Accounting, Field Operations) and external partners (e.g., clients, municipalities, subcontractors)Supervisory Responsibilities* Indirect: Where applicable, directs and oversees staff members regarding construction, operations, and/or tasks and assignments at a project site.Why Join Brooks Construction?Our team-based approach ensures that every employee has the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
