CITY OF MILBANKPark Maintenance WorkerDepartment: Parks & RecreationWage: $13.00 - $17.00 per hour DOQ and Experience (Non-Exempt)Reports to: Parks & Cemetery LeadDate: March 10, 2026Job DescriptionGeneral Statement of DutiesThe Parks Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining and enhancing city parks, recreational facilities, and related areas. This role involves manual labor, equipment operation, and routine maintenance to ensure safe, clean, and visually appealing public spaces. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.This position primarily involves hands-on maintenance and repair tasks within city parks, athletic fields, cemeteries, and related public areas. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Parks & Cemetery Lead or a designated supervisor, with some independence in day-to-day tasks. The role requires outdoor work in various weather conditions and exposure to noise, dust, dirt, and machinery with moving parts. Protective equipment, such as gloves and safety glasses, may be required.Essential FunctionsLandscaping & GroundskeepingMows, waters, fertilizes, and cultivates grass and vegetation.Trims fence lines and drainage ditch banks.Cleans and weeds flower beds, mulches, and prunes shrubs.Facility & Equipment MaintenanceCollects and disposes of litter and debris.Empties park garbage cans and transports waste to disposal sites.Cleans and paints park structures, including concession stands and field houses.Repairs and maintains facilities, including plumbing, doors, and windows.Installs and maintains water lines, irrigation systems, fencing, benches, picnic tables, and flagpoles.Athletic Field Preparation & MaintenanceConstructs and maintains pitcher's mounds and infields.Levels playing surfaces and apply field markings.Installs and maintains sports equipment such as soccer goals, basketball hoops, goalposts, bleachers, backstops, and nettingEquipment Operation & SafetyUses hand tools (shovels, rakes, picks) and power tools (chainsaws, edgers, weed eaters, mowers, field painters).Conducts basic maintenance on equipment, including checking air, oil, fuel, spark plugs, and mower blades.Ensure all equipment is in safe operating condition and reports damage or maintenance needs.Other ResponsibilitiesAssists in training new employees.Provides information and responds to inquiries from the public courteously.Attend training sessions, workshops, and meetings to stay current with industry practices.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of:Safety procedures in parks maintenance and landscaping.Proper operation and care of tools and equipment.Parks and athletic field maintenance techniques.Skills in:Operating and maintaining hand and power tools.Performing minor repairs on facilities and equipment.Following safety procedures and guidelines.Abilities to:Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.Follow written and verbal instructions.Solve problems logically and efficiently.Work independently and as part of a team.Adapt to new technologies and procedures.Minimum QualificationsEducation & ExperienceSome related maintenance experience preferred.Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.Must have a valid SD driver's license.Physical Requirements & Work EnvironmentPhysical Abilities:Ability to stand, walk, bend, crouch, or stoop intermittently.Ability to lift light objects (Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.Exposure to noise, dust, grease, and machinery with moving parts.Use of protective equipment as necessary.DisclaimerThis job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by an employee assigned to this position.
