The unit consists of 54 beds divided into two semi-private rooms. On day shift, the nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-5, and on night shift, it is 1:5-6. Common diagnoses for patients include stroke, spine surgery, seizures, brain tumors, head injuries, and other neurological conditions. RNs will be required to titrate drips, including heparin titrated based on PTT. Experience with heparin drips is essential. There is a charge nurse available 24/7, who does not take an assignment unless the unit is short-staffed. A house supervisor is also present at all times. Patient care techs are available on the unit, with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day and evening shifts, and 1:10-12 on night shifts. RNs are expected to troubleshoot respiratory equipment but have limited direct involvement with COVID patients. Telemetry monitoring is managed by house-wide telemetry, so nurses do not need to read strips. The scheduled shifts are 12 hours, with weekend requirements of every other weekend. Every other holiday commitment is also expected. Traveling nurses may float within the general unit or to areas in which they are skills competent. The dress code requires tattoos to be covered during duty, and only ear piercings are allowed. Orientation includes two days of training with a preceptor and educator, focusing on unit-specific and computer training.
