It offers undergraduate degrees in musiceducation, music therapy, music industry studies, and musicperformance, with concentrations in instrumental or vocal performance,music theory/composition, jazz, and sacred music. Graduate programsare offered in music therapy and music performance, withconcentrations in instrumental or vocal performance, collaborativepiano, music composition, and conducting. Alongside books, scores, and recordings, the SpecialCollections Research Center in Belk Library houses an expandingcollection of rare books and manuscript materials related to classicalmusic. Highlights include the scores of conductor Hans Schwieger, theoriginal manuscripts of composer Tui St. George Tucker, and theMatanya Ophee Collection - one of the world's largest collections of19th-century guitar music.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Appalachian State University Hayes School of Music invitesapplications for a tenure-track position, Assistant Professor of Oboe,with appointment starting fall 2026.This faculty member will recruit, provide applied instruction toundergraduate and graduate oboe students, teach oboe methodscourses (for undergraduate music education majors), and teach oboepedagogy and literature course(s) (for undergraduate and graduatelevel music performance majors).Responsibilities include maintaining an active performance schedule,assisting with outreach and recruiting for the Hayes School of Music,and full participation in the responsibilities of faculty membership (e.g.,prospective student and ensemble auditions, advising, curriculumdevelopment, and service activities at the University and Hayes Schoolof Music level). The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitmenttoward students of diverse musical backgrounds, perspectives, andinterests.Additional responsibilities may include teaching courses in musictheory, aural skills, and/or chamber music. Other duties may beassigned by the Director of the Hayes School of Music.The Hayes School of Music is interested in candidates who havedemonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership inteaching, scholarly, research, and creative activities, and service,toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.In the Hayes School of Music, full-time tenure-eligible or tenured facultymembers are expected to teach 24 full-time equivalent hours (FTEs)per academic year. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position.
