Assistant Vice President, Tax Advisory

Senior III / Assistant Vice PresidentTax Advisory & Due DiligenceOVERVIEWExbo Group advises corporations, private equity firms, and growth-stage companies on the tax aspects of M&A transactions, structuring, and complex advisory engagements. Our tax practice is growing, and we are adding a Senior III / AVP to own a meaningful portion of client delivery. This is not a traditional compliance role, and it is not a standard Big 4 diligence role. We need someone who can independently identify issues, assess materiality, quantify exposure, and explain implications directly to clients. If you are looking for a role where you own outcomes - not just tasks - this is it.WHAT YOU'LL OWNTax Due Diligence - Primary ResponsibilityYou will execute and progressively lead buy-side and sell-side tax diligence engagements. This means going beyond procedures to develop the judgment required to identify issues, assess materiality, quantify exposure, and communicate findings to clients clearly and independently.Review federal and state tax returns and tie results back to financial statementsAnalyze M-1/M-3 adjustments, NOLs, credits, basis issues, and other tax attributesIdentify historical tax exposures and assess deal-level riskDetermine what is actually important versus what is merely technically interestingPrepare and review diligence workpapers and client-ready reportsRun kickoff calls, manage diligence request lists, and lead management discussionsExplain findings and recommendations in a clear, practical mannerState & Local Tax / Sales Tax RemediationA significant portion of diligence findings involve state and local tax exposure. You will also support standalone sales tax remediation engagements - identifying nexus risk, quantifying historical exposure, and managing remediation. You do not need to be a SALT specialist, but you need enough awareness to identify risk and escalate when required.Team Oversight & Quality OwnershipYou will work closely with our extended team and own output quality regardless of who prepared the first draft - reviewing workpapers, providing feedback, clarifying scope, and ensuring consistency across deliverables.WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FORThe ideal candidate has deep tax return knowledge, strong analytical instincts, and the confidence to drive projects and client conversations independently. Equally important: ownership, intellectual curiosity, and comfort operating outside a narrow definition of your role.High Ownership: Takes responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks. Naturally steps in when something needs attention.Strong Judgment: Distinguishes between technically interesting observations and issues that actually matter in a deal context.Learning Agility: Picks up unfamiliar concepts quickly and actively seeks to expand beyond existing expertise.Client Presence: Communicates confidently, explains technical concepts clearly, and represents the firm well independently.Builder Mentality: Enjoys improving workflows and creating structure where it doesn't exist. Wants to build, not just execute.Comfort with Ambiguity: Moves work forward despite incomplete information and communicates uncertainty without stalling.QUALIFICATIONSCPA requiredBachelor's degree in Accounting or FinanceMinimum 3 years in Big 4 tax at the experienced senior or new manager levelTax return preparation experience - you know how to read and tie a returnStrong Excel skillsM&A tax diligence or transaction advisory experience preferredSALT awareness a plus; specialist depth not requiredTHE OPPORTUNITYThis role offers significant autonomy and growth in a fast-moving advisory environment. What we can't teach is ownership, judgment, and the drive to build something.ABOUT EXBO GROUPExbo Group grew out of a $400M New York based venture capital fund and has expanded into a full-service financial advisory firm serving growth-stage companies and middle-market financial sponsors nationwide.
