Substation Project Engineer

Location: Fresno, CA (hybrid; onsite 2x/week)Duration: Permanent PositionSalary: $175,080.00/yrOverviewInsight Global is partnering with a large local utility as they grow their Electric Engineering organization to support the surge in electricity demand driven by data centers, electric vehicle adoption, and large-scale grid modernization efforts.The Substation Project Engineer will join a large Electric Engineering organization focused on ensuring safe, reliable, and scalable infrastructure delivery. This team is responsible for engineering standards, design, regulatory compliance, and execution of substation and power system projects that support long-term grid performance.This role combines hands-on engineering (studies and conceptual design) with project execution, coordination, and technical leadership across internal teams, contractors, and consultants.Key ResponsibilitiesEngineering Analysis & DesignPerform engineering analyses and studies to support substation projectsDevelop conceptual designs and evaluate engineering solutionsPrepare technical documentation including design criteria, specifications, and reportsInterpret and apply applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirementsProject Coordination & ExecutionPresent findings to internal stakeholders, contractors, and vendorsParticipate in design review meetings and conduct field walkdownsEvaluate and recommend alternative project solutions based on cost, feasibility, and system impactCoordinate across engineering, construction, and project teamsConsultant & Contractor OversightPrepare and evaluate proposals from engineering consultantsReview consultant work for technical accuracy and complianceProvide guidance to contractors and design teamsReview technical documents, drawings, and specificationsReliability & Issue ResolutionSupport root cause analysis and contribute to corrective actionsAssist in development of restoration plans for system reliabilityRespond to facility failures when neededProject Ownership & PlanningPlan and manage work independently under general directionManage multiple projects simultaneously depending on scope and complexityApply engineering judgment to develop practical, cost-effective solutionsSupport and guide less experienced engineers when applicableTechnical EnvironmentUtility-scale substation engineering and infrastructure projectsFull project lifecycle exposure from engineering studies through construction supportCross-functional collaboration with project management, construction, contractors, and consultantsHeavy focus on technical documentation, compliance, and design reviewHybrid work environment with both office-based work and field engagementWhat Makes This Opportunity Stand Out?Work on high-impact infrastructure tied to grid modernization, EV growth, and data center demandStrong mix of technical engineering work and real-world project executionExposure to large-scale utility operations and cross-functional engineering teamsOpportunity to build long-term career growth within utility engineering and project leadershipRequired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field3+ years of experience in power system engineering and designAbility to work hybrid onsite 2x/week in Oakland, West Sacramento, or FresnoNice to Have (Not Required)Experience in substation engineering and designCalifornia Professional Engineer (PE) license$175,080.00 per yearExact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education.Benefit packages for this role will start on the 31st day of employment and include medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as HSA, FSA, and DCFSA account options, and 401k retirement account access with employer matching.
