Environmental Specialist

SUMMARYThe Environmental Specialist manages the company’s waste compliance program across multiple facilities and jurisdictions, serving as the primary point of contact for regulatory compliance. This role evaluates waste streams and performs hazardous and non-hazardous determinations in accordance with RCRA and state regulations to ensure proper classification, handling, and disposal.They act as the internal technical lead, providing guidance to operations and ensuring waste activities are documented from generation through disposal. The role also develops training materials, SOPs, and guidance documents to support consistent compliance.In addition to waste management, the Environmental Specialist supports other environmental programs such as SWPPP, TRI, and Tier II reporting, helping ensure overall regulatory compliance across operations.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Receive and evaluate waste inquiries; determine if generator knowledge or analytical testing is required and coordinate sampling as neededConduct and document hazardous and non-hazardous waste determinations using process knowledge, analytical data, and regulatory evaluation in accordance with RCRA and state regulationsInterpret analytical results and apply regulatory criteria (including listed and characteristic wastes) to establish proper classification, codes (EPA and Texas), and management requirementsProvide guidance on SAA and CAA requirements, including container management, labeling, inspections, and accumulation limitsMaintain waste determinations, Notices of Registration (NOR), and supporting documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements (40 CFR 262.11)Prepare and manage waste profiles; coordinate with TSDFs, transporters, and vendors to ensure accurate characterization and compliant disposalCoordinate waste shipments and ensure all disposal documentation is complete and retainedMaintain records and reporting in systems such as RCRA Info and STEERS; prepare required reports (e.g., AWS) and ensure audit/inspection readinessTrack waste generation and monitor generator status; identify changes and coordinate required regulatory or operational actions to maintain complianceDevelop and deliver environmental compliance training; maintain training records and ensure completionCreate and maintain SOPs, procedures, and guidance documents to support consistent waste management practicesProvide regulatory guidance to operations; research and interpret CFR and state regulations to support compliance decisionsSupport inspections, audits, corrective actions, and regulatory responsesCoordinate with customers on environmental and waste-related activities impacting their facilitiesSupport waste minimization efforts and continuous improvement initiativesAssist with broader environmental programs, including SWPPP, TRI, Tier II reporting, and applicable oil & gas (RRC) requirementsManage compliance activities across multiple facilities and stay current on regulatory developmentsREQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or related field, or equivalent experienceExtensive experience with industrial waste management and RCRA compliance (40 CFR 260–273 and state regulations)Experience supporting environmental compliance across multiple states/jurisdictionsExperience characterizing waste streams using generator knowledge and/or analytical dataExperience with Texas Waste Codes, Notices of Registration (NOR), RCRA Info, and STEERSExperience preparing waste profiles and coordinating disposal with TSDFs and vendorsExperience maintaining waste documentation from characterization through final dispositionExperience in industrial, oil & gas, or chemical manufacturing environments, managing multiple facilities and prioritiesStrong computer skills with compliance systems, records, and documentation managementAbility to research and interpret environmental regulations (CFR and state rules)Ability to clearly communicate regulatory requirements and coordinate with operations and customersAbility to develop and deliver environmental compliance trainingAbility and willingness to travel nationwide as neededFamiliarity with Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) programs preferredExperience supporting environmental programs such as SWPPP and SPCCWORK ENVIRONMENT/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:This role supports multiple industrial facilities and requires visits to plants, labs, storage sites, and customer locations to perform environmental compliance activities. Responsibilities include inspections, evaluations, and supporting compliance efforts in both indoor and outdoor settings.The position requires working safely in active environments, wearing appropriate PPE, and performing physical tasks such as walking, climbing, and occasional lifting. It also involves balancing fieldwork with administrative duties to maintain compliance and documentation.Travel to facilities nationwide is required.
