Financial Controller

Controller – Fashion Apparel CompanyWe are seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller to oversee all accounting, inventory, costing, and financial operations for a growing fashion apparel company servicing major retailers including Kohl’s and Walmart. This individual will play a critical role in managing financial reporting, inventory accuracy, costing analysis, compliance, and operational accounting processes across the organization. The ideal candidate will have strong experience within the apparel, fashion, consumer goods, or wholesale industry and understand the complexities of working with large retail accounts and overseas production.ResponsibilitiesOversee all day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month-end closeManage inventory accounting, reconciliations, and valuation across multiple warehouses, 3PLs, and retail channelsAnalyze and maintain accurate product costing including landed costs, freight, duties, chargebacks, markdowns, and vendor costsDevelop and monitor inventory controls to ensure accuracy, shrink reduction, and compliancePrepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reporting packagesManage budgeting, forecasting, cash flow analysis, and financial planning activitiesPartner with Operations, Production, Logistics, and Sales teams to improve profitability and operational efficiencyMonitor retailer deductions, chargebacks, compliance penalties, and margin impact related to Kohl’s, Walmart, and other major accountsOversee standard costing, inventory reserves, markdown exposure, and margin analysisCoordinate audits, tax filings, and external accounting relationshipsEnsure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company financial policiesReview and improve accounting procedures, reporting systems, and operational workflowsSupervise and mentor accounting staff while building scalable financial processesAssist ownership and executive leadership with strategic financial analysis and business decision-makingQualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field requiredCPA preferred but not required7+ years of accounting and finance experience with strong exposure to inventory and costingExperience within fashion apparel, wholesale, consumer products, or retail industries strongly preferredStrong understanding of inventory accounting, landed costing, production costing, and retailer compliance requirementsExperience working with major retailers such as Walmart, Kohl’s, Target, Ross, or similar accounts preferredKnowledge of overseas manufacturing, freight, duties, and supply chain costingStrong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skillsAbility to work cross-functionally with operations, logistics, production, and sales teamsHands-on leadership style with the ability to operate both strategically and tacticallyStrong communication and management skillsSystems & SoftwareAdvanced Microsoft Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, formulas, and financial modelingExperience with ERP systems, inventory management systems, and accounting platformsExperience with apparel or wholesale systems preferredFamiliarity with EDI processes and retailer compliance systems is a plus
