Position Purpose
The Dining Services Associate is responsible for preparing and serving meals, maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment, and collaborating with volunteers, staff, and clients ("neighbors") to ensure efficient and consistent food service operations. This role requires flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to adapt to changing daily needs.
Core Responsibilities – Food Preparation & Service
Prepare and serve evening meals as needed
Provide meals for Main Shelter, Sisterhood, Welcome Center, Inclement Weather Shelter, and employed neighbors as needed
Step in to cook and operate dishwashing equipment when volunteers are unavailable
Assist with menu planning
Follow daily and deep cleaning schedules
Comply with health codes and HACCP standards
Store food properly and follow FIFO practices
Label and discard food appropriately
Secure and inventory kitchen tools daily
Volunteer, Staff & Client Engagement
Train and support volunteers, team members, and neighbors
Teach basic kitchen and cleaning skills as needed
Maintain a positive and respectful environment
Support individuals with dietary needs and religious restrictions
Inventory & Coordination
Track donated and purchased supplies
Document donations
Assist other departments with meal support as needed
Team & Organizational Responsibilities
Attend meetings and supervision sessions
Assist with staff and volunteer training as needed
Support operations during extreme inclement weather
Participate in annual events as needed
Work at least one holiday per year
Performance Expectations
Team-Level:
Weekly inspections completed
Pass health and safety checks
Resolve issues within two weeks
Execute weekly meal schedule
Individual-Level:
Serve meals on time
Maintain a clean, inspection-ready kitchen
Qualifications
Required Certifications
Food Service Manager Certification (One week upon hire or 4 weeks after hire)
Civil Rights Training Certification (needed annually)
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED
Food service experience required
Skills & Abilities
Strong customer service and communication
Cultural awareness and sensitivity
Basic computer skills
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Ability to work in fast-paced environments
Ability to manage stress and de-escalate situations
