The Teacher Assistant may be requested to perform a wide range of tasks in order to support the efforts of the lead teacher, meet the needs of all students, assist with providing a secure testing environment as assigned, and ensure the provision of quality instruction for all students. In addition, the Teacher Assistant provides one-on-one assistance with academics and behavioral problems, may lead small group activities, and may be assigned to EC classes to provide appropriate assistance. The Teacher Assistant also assists the lead teacher with general housekeeping and clerical duties as needed. All duties listed under "Essential Duties" are at the request of, or under the direction of, the teacher to whom the Teacher Assistant is assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Minimum Degree Level: Associate's DegreeMinimum Experience/Requirements: Candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) hold at least an Associate's Degree, 2) 48-semester hours of transferable college coursework, or 3) have 96-contact hours of college coursework plus passing scores on the WorkKeys test.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESAbility to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when student is participating in an inclusive activityAbility to motivate studentsAbility to maintain a clean and orderly environmentAbility to perform general clerical dutiesAbility to maintain order and discipline in a classroomAbility to operate common office machinesAbility to serve as a testing proctor as requestedAbility to maintain basic files and recordsAbility to understand and follow oral and written instructionsAbility to speak English clearly in order to be understood by studentsAbility to exhibit empathy and patience especially with younger children and children with special needsAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCEMinimum of 48 hours of college level coursework with a GPA of 2.0 or higherAny equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilitiesCERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTSMust possess a valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor VehiclesPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Two (2) to five (5) years serving as a classroom teacher assistantTraining in dealing with students with special needsSpanish SpeakingESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESAssist teacher(s) with executing instruction and evaluating its effectivenessConstantly monitor the safety and well-being of studentsMonitor student attitudes and encourage self-esteemAssist students with becoming increasingly independentMonitor student behavior and helps maintain discipline in the classroomRecord time out and in class suspensionAssist with crisis prevention; restrain students appropriately and as trained, as neededAssist students with learning; reinforce and clarify instructions as permittedConduct short sessions on improving study skillsProvides one-on-one assistance as neededMaintain standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of studentsPerform general housekeeping duties associated with maintaining an orderly classroomPerform minor repair and maintenance tasks related to school equipmentPerform various clerical duties as neededMaintain records of student progress as instructed by the teacherDevelop and file incident reportsAssist teacher with grading student papers and scoring tests as requestedServe as a test proctor as directedCheck daily attendanceDevelop classroom display and instructional materialsMaintain and operate audiovisual equipmentFeed students, when necessary; toilet students, if needed; and assist with any other task's students are not able to perform for themselvesParticipates in staff development workshops and staff meetings as requiredPerform other duties as assigned by the Teacher and/or the Principal or Principal's Designee
