Exceptional Children's (EC) Teacher Job DescriptionMacon County SchoolsPosition SummaryThe Exceptional Children's (EC) Teacher provides specialized instruction to students with disabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), North Carolina Policies Governing Services for Children with Disabilities, and the NC Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS). The teacher develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), supports access to the general education curriculum, and promotes academic, social, and behavioral growth in a least restrictive environment.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDevelop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with IDEA and NCDPI policiesProvide specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilitiesDeliver instruction aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS) and adapt curriculum as neededDifferentiate instruction to support a wide range of exceptionalities and learning needsCollect, analyze, and maintain data on student progress toward IEP goalsUse data to inform instruction and make educational decisionsImplement and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and support positive behavioral strategiesProvide a structured, supportive, and inclusive learning environmentCollaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and access to the general curriculumWork closely with related service providers (e.g., speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, school psychologists)Participate in and facilitate IEP meetings, including annual reviews and reevaluationsCommunicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress, services, and supportsEnsure compliance with all state and federal timelines, documentation, and procedural safeguardsMaintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with FERPA and IDEAUtilize assistive technology and accommodations/modifications as requiredSupport students in developing independence, self-advocacy, and life skillsParticipate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and ongoing professional developmentStay current with best practices in special education and legal requirementsFollow all Macon County Schools policies, procedures, and expectationsDemonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and a commitment to equity and inclusionPerform other duties as assigned by school administrationKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of IDEA, NCDPI EC policies, and special education proceduresUnderstanding of various exceptionalities (e.g., learning disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities, emotional/behavioral disabilities)Ability to design and implement specially designed instructionStrong data collection and progress monitoring skillsEffective classroom management and behavior support strategiesAbility to collaborate with multidisciplinary teamsStrong communication and organizational skillsAbility to maintain confidentiality and professionalismPhysical Requirements Light to medium work classification (may vary by assignment)Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout classroom and school environmentsAbility to assist students with mobility and personal care needs as requiredOccasional lifting of students or equipment (up to 25-50 pounds depending on assignment)Evaluation Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the North Carolina Educator Effectiveness System (NCEES) and Macon County Schools evaluation proceduresTerms of Employment Full-time, 10-month positionSalary based on the North Carolina State Salary Schedule with applicable local supplementWork calendar determined by the districtBenefits Overview Medical, dental, and optional vision coverageParticipation in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS)Optional benefits (FSA, disability, life, etc.)Professional development and licensure support opportunitiesMinimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field from an accredited institutionValid North Carolina teaching license in Exceptional Children (EC)Knowledge of IDEA and NCDPI EC policies and proceduresAbility to meet all NCDPI and Macon County Schools employment requirements
