Exceptional Children (EC) & Middle School ELA Teacher Job DescriptionMacon County SchoolsPosition SummaryThe EC & Middle School ELA Teacher provides both standards-based English Language Arts instruction and specialized instruction for students with disabilities in grades 6-8. This position integrates the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (ELA) with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to ensure students with disabilities have access to the general curriculum in the least restrictive environment. The teacher supports academic achievement, literacy development, and social-emotional growth while ensuring compliance with IDEA and NCDPI policies.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPlan and deliver instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (ELA) for middle gradesDevelop students' skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language useProvide specially designed instruction to students with disabilities based on IEP goals and needsAdapt and modify ELA curriculum to ensure access and progress for diverse learnersDevelop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with IDEA and NCDPI EC policiesCollect, analyze, and maintain data on student progress toward IEP goalsDifferentiate instruction to meet the needs of Exceptional Children (EC), English learners (EL), and other diverse learnersProvide accommodations and modifications in classroom instruction and assessmentsCollaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and co-teaching modelsWork with related service providers (e.g., speech, occupational therapy, school psychologists) to support student needsImplement and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and support positive behavior strategiesCreate a structured, inclusive, and supportive classroom environmentAssess student learning using formative and summative methods and use data to guide instructionMaintain accurate records of grades, progress monitoring, and EC documentationParticipate in and facilitate IEP meetings, including annual reviews and reevaluationsCommunicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding academic progress and IEP servicesIntegrate instructional technology and assistive technology to support student learningPromote literacy skills, critical thinking, and independenceParticipate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and professional developmentEnsure compliance with all state and federal timelines, documentation, and procedural safeguardsFollow all Macon County Schools policies, procedures, and expectationsDemonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and a commitment to equity and inclusionPerform other duties as assigned by school administrationKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesStrong knowledge of middle school ELA content and instructional practicesKnowledge of special education law (IDEA) and NCDPI EC policiesAbility to design and implement specially designed instructionUnderstanding of literacy development for struggling and diverse learnersStrong data collection and progress monitoring skillsEffective classroom management and behavior support strategiesAbility to collaborate in co-teaching and inclusion settingsStrong communication and organizational skillsAbility to maintain confidentiality and professionalismPhysical RequirementsLight to medium work classificationAbility to stand, walk, and move throughout classroom and school environmentsAbility to assist students with mobility and personal care needs as requiredOccasional lifting of materials or equipment (up to 25-50 pounds depending on assignment)Evaluation* Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the North Carolina Educator Effectiveness System (NCEES) and Macon County Schools evaluation proceduresTerms of EmploymentFull-time, 10-month positionSalary based on the North Carolina State Salary Schedule with applicable local supplementWork calendar determined by the districtBenefits OverviewMedical, dental, and optional vision coverageParticipation in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS)Optional benefits (FSA, disability, life, etc.)Professional development and licensure support opportunitiesMinimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in Special Education, English Education, or related field from an accredited institutionValid North Carolina teaching license in Exceptional Children (EC)Valid North Carolina teaching license in Middle Grades English Language Arts (6-9) or ability to obtainKnowledge of the NC Standard Course of Study (ELA) and NCDPI EC policiesAbility to meet all NCDPI and Macon County Schools employment requirements
