Quality Inspector (End Plant)
Brief DescriptionPOSITION SUMMARY:Our Waco, TX facility manufactures aluminum ends/lids for beverage cans commonly used for soft drinks, beers, energy drinks, teas and non-carbonated beverages. Using state of the art end-making technology, this high-speed environment provides rewarding manufacturing opportunities.We are seeking a meticulous and detail-oriented Quality Inspector to join our Quality Control (QC) team at our high-volume Aluminum End Plant. This individual is responsible for the daily execution of all product quality checks and measurements across the manufacturing lines (Shell, Liner, and Conversion). The Quality Inspector ensures product integrity, accurately documents all findings, and provides immediate feedback to Production leadership to prevent the shipment of non-conforming products.Essential Job FunctionsINSPECTION AND MEASUREMENT EXECUTIONExecute scheduled quality checks on can ends at every stage of the process using specialized precision instruments. Shell Press Checks: Perform dimensional checks using micrometers and calipers, measuring diameter, flange width, and panel depth. Compound Liner Checks: Perform wet weight, dry weight, and compound cure tests (e.g., Tanner or MEK test) to verify proper sealing integrity. Conversion Press Checks: Use advanced specialized gauges, including score depth gauges, tab retention meters, and buckle resistance testers, to verify final critical specifications. DEFECT IDENTIFICATION AND REPORTINGVisually inspect product for cosmetic defects (e.g., splatter, wrinkles, burrs, scratches) and functional defects (e.g., incomplete scores, voids). Immediately report any process deviation or non-conforming product found to the appropriate Operator, Supervisor, and Quality Manager. Initiate and manage the tagging and documentation of Quality Hold material. DOCUMENTATION AND COMPLIANCEAccurately input all test data into the plant’s electronic Quality Management System (QMS) or Statistical Process Control (SPC) software. Maintain all quality log sheets, test result reports, and sample retention records meticulously. Verify that production operations are adhering to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to handling and process settings. LABORATORY AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCEPerform routine cleaning and basic preventative maintenance on QC laboratory equipment and gauges. Assist the Quality Manager in performing Gage R&R studies and supporting external audits by retrieving and presenting historical quality documentation.RequirementsEDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:RequiredEducation: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Experience: 1–3 years of experience in Quality Control or Inspection within a high-speed manufacturing environment (e.g., food/beverage, automotive, or medical devices). Technical Skills: Proficiency in using precision hand tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges). Detail Orientation: High degree of accuracy in measurement and data entry; ability to spot microscopic defects. PreferredExperience with SAP or other ERP systems. Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma principles or Statistical Process Control (SPC). Familiarity with metal forming or high-speed press operations. General Skills/ExperienceUnderstanding manufacturing processes. Prefer data collection and analysis experience in a high-volume automated manufacturing environment. Understanding engineering, scientific and other technical information. Experience of New Product Introduction, reworking design changes and upgrades through to production. Ability to understand and interpret technical manuals, 2D drawings, P&IDs, fluid and electrical schematics and other engineering documentation.Proven understanding of BOMs, manufacturability, process design, process validation, assembly methods, design reviews and cost reduction methodologies.Innovative leader with the ability to identify opportunities and influence organizations to gain support and overcome resistance with data and persuasion.Ability to develop manufacturing documentation. Capable of identifying critical process parameters and applying statistics to process measurement and control.Development and qualification of tooling/equipment skills. Strong organizational skills and proven ability to maintain accurate, detailed records that will be audited periodically.Excellent communication and negotiation skills for relaying data (verbally and in-writing) between other employees and clients.Ability to work on multiple projects at once with tight deadlines. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Must be able to identify and execute improvement opportunities through both process improvements and system improvements.Ability to take ownership and responsibility with little direction. Ability to be pragmatic in decision making; requires high integrity. Ability to effectively train people inside and outside their work group. Preference will be given to qualified local candidates.
