OverviewOur Post-Surgical Unit is located on the first floor of the Medical Tower. This unit provides care to post-operative patients who are admitted for 1-2 night's stay and are planned for discharge home. All patient rooms are private and we currently have the capacity for up to 12 patients. PSU is staffed with a team of RNs and Perioperative Technicians. Leadership is comprised of a Nurse Manager, Team Leader, and a designated Charge Nurse for evening and night shifts. The unit opens at 8am on Monday morning with team members working 8 hour shifts, 7-3, 3-11, & 11-7. Unit closes on Saturday after all patients are discharged, no later than 3pm. Our patient population ranges in age from adolescents to geriatrics and comes from a variety of surgical specialties: plastic surgery, neurosurgery, gynecological surgery, orthopedic surgery, ENT, urology, and general surgery. Our dedicated team provides patient-centered care to support the patient's recovery with the goal of reaching optimal patient outcomes. Strong focus is placed on pain and nausea management, mobility, and prevention of post-operative complications. Our priority is to make our patient's experience pleasant and comfortable in a safe and secure environment.ResponsibilitiesPlans, coordinates, and directs quality, compassionate care by maintaining standards of professional nursing practice and creating positive therapeutic relationships with patients/families. Supervises LPNs, PCAs, PCAs/US, US, Ortho Techs and other non-licensed staff.Assesses condition on each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis to include but not limited to the patient's physical condition, psychological status, social status, spiritual and cultural needs, pain assessment/management, nutritional and functional status, developmental or age related factors, and discharge planning needs. Plans, provides, and documents patient and/or significant other education based on physical, behavioral, psychological, developmental, and age-related factors, after identifying barriers to learning. Evaluates and regularly reevaluates patient care; coordinates care planning with patient, family, providers and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes. Assigns and delegates nursing care to team members in accordance with the patient's needs and the capabilities of the team members. Applies safety principles when performing care Accurately documents observations, care provided, and changes in care plan. Provides accurate handoff reports and participates in unit based huddles Assists in performance improvement (PI) activities by serving on PI teams as warranted, assisting with PI measures and supporting and implementing changes necessary for improvement. Current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider training required. BSN preferred, minimum Associates required.
