Container Engineer

The Container Program Manager will lead the planning and execution of packaging plans for future vehicle programs. Related activities include the on-time delivery of the right container at the lowest cost for current and Future Launch Programs (Vehicle /Powertrain). Work involves a great deal of integration and initiative with Manufacturing, Purchasing, Logistics, vehicle assembly plants, Suppliers and Program Teams. Engineer will be working with larger components known as "Big Uglies". These would be larger body/chassis/interior products and assemblies. Engineer will focus on rack design, development and testing for product to get from supplier to assembly center. * Represent the containers planning team as the single point of contact with the program teams * Represent Global Containers in various external venues including the Program Execution Team (PET), Manufacturing Integration Team (MIT), Material Launch Readiness Team (MLRT) meetings. * Manage container planning activities to GVDP requirements including coordinating and managing integrated container fabricators in the design, development, production and deployment of specialized containers * Manage overall container program life-cycle definition, finances, timing and readiness. * Conduct container concept and sample buyoff workshops. * Identify / Implement cost reduction opportunities. * Total Enterprise Cost business cases relative to container investment, logistics CPU impact and material piece price * Container Program Financial AR (Capital / Expense) estimating, forecasting, spending and approval responsibility. * Pre-Launch management activities including PFEP (plan for every part) ownership, supply chain container system sizing and supporting supplier readiness. * Manage post-Launch container activities (quality, EWO’s, annuals. MCE’s) * Respond to critical capacity studies, resolve container related capacity issues / resolution. * Support advance container planning (AVDC) group with effective Post-VPI data transfer activities including responses to Manufacturing Planning Studies (MPS) and Change Requests (CR). * Analyze, interpret, evaluate, plan and make recommendations on programs and policies relative to total enterprise cost analysis. * Make presentations to all levels of management, organizations and disciplines. A Packaging Engineer for Vehicle Programs is responsible for developing, validating and implementing specialized containers that ship components & sub-assemblies into assembly plants. The work of a packaging engineer involves taking inputs from multiple stakeholders, understand supply chain & manufacturing constraints to develop a robust packaging solution. The key goal of a packaging engineer is to protect part quality while optimizing container density & logistics equipment to minimize enterprise costs. Critical engineering skill sets include manufacturing and assembly processes, as well as successful project management. Being able to identify and eliminate waste within the logistics, manufacturing and material handling processes are preferred. • Develop packaging solutions that support multiple stakeholders in the supply base, logistics, and manufacturing • Execute project management on multiple container designs & commodities to support future program milestones & deliveries • Responsible to develop validation protocols including loading, transportation and unloading to ensure robust designs • Ultimately the packaging engineer is responsible for developing a robust solution with high first time quality (zero rework). • Must be able to prioritize workload based on supporting multiple programs / studies at the same time, and be able to work independently to meet goals & KPI's • Must be the technical expert for packaging at a commodity level to support future strategies from a container & logistics perspective • Expected to lead discussions and ask questions to help identify critical constraints that the container must support while controlling costs within multifunctional groups • Critical skills for this job include: good communication and computer skills to work effectively across the organizations. • 3D modelling and CAD software knowledge preferred (UG-NX & TeamCenter experience) • Most of the travel is local to SE Michigan, however some scheduled overnight trips to plants within North America (US, Canada & Mexico) to support program launches should be expected.
