AWS Cloud Migration Architect (VMware)
AWS Cloud Migration Architect (VMware)100% Remote6-12 Month Contract$100-105/hr. W2Role OverviewBrooksource is seeking a hands-on AWS Migration Architect/Engineer to support enterprise and public-sector organizations transitioning VMware workloads into Amazon Web Services (AWS). This individual will serve as a technical SME across the migration lifecycle, helping customers assess existing VMware environments, define workload migration strategies, build migration waves, execute workload migrations, support cutovers, and stabilize workloads following migration. The ideal candidate combines deep VMware infrastructure knowledge with practical AWS migration experience. This is not a traditional VMware administration role. We are looking for someone who understands how applications, servers, storage, networking, identity, and dependencies operate within a VMware estate and can translate those workloads into secure, scalable AWS architectures.Top 3 Required Technical Skills1. Hands-on VMware vSphere Infrastructure ExpertiseDeep working knowledge of vCenter, ESXi, clusters, VM networking, datastores/storage, snapshots, HA/DRS, vMotion, distributed switches, and troubleshooting. The candidate must be able to assess and understand an existing VMware estate, not simply administer basic VM tasks.2. Proven VMware-to-AWS Migration ExecutionDirect experience moving VMware workloads into AWS, including discovery, migration planning, replication, test launches, migration waves, production cutover, validation, rollback planning, and post-migration stabilization. Experience with AWS Application Migration Service (MGN), AWS Transform, Migration Hub, or similar AWS migration tooling is strongly preferred.3. Strong Hybrid Networking and Infrastructure TroubleshootingStrong knowledge of VPCs, subnets, routing, security groups, DNS, firewalls, VPN/Direct Connect, VLANs, load balancing, and application dependencies. The candidate must be capable of diagnosing connectivity and dependency issues during migration and cutover activities.Key ResponsibilitiesAssess VMware environments including vCenter, ESXi hosts, clusters, virtual machines, storage, networking, resource utilization, operating systems, and application dependencies.Analyze VMware inventory and discovery data using tools such as RVTools, VMware exports, AWS discovery tooling, and other infrastructure assessment platforms.Partner with application, infrastructure, networking, security, and business stakeholders to identify workload dependencies and migration requirements.Evaluate workloads using migration strategies such as rehost, replatform, relocate, refactor, retire, retain, and repurchase.Design target AWS environments for VMware workloads moving to Amazon EC2 and other AWS services.Support VMware migration pathways involving Amazon EC2, AWS Transform, AWS Application Migration Service concepts, and Amazon Elastic VMware Service where appropriate.Translate VMware compute, storage, networking, security, and availability requirements into AWS architectures.Configure and troubleshoot AWS infrastructure including EC2, EBS, VPCs, subnets, route tables, security groups, IAM, load balancers, Route 53, VPN, and Direct Connect connectivity.Develop migration wave plans based on application dependencies, business criticality, infrastructure relationships, migration complexity, and customer constraints.Configure and validate workload replication from source VMware environments into AWS.Perform migration test launches and coordinate application validation with customer technical teams.Develop detailed cutover plans, rollback procedures, outage requirements, validation steps, and migration runbooks.Lead or support production migration events and troubleshoot infrastructure, networking, storage, operating system, and connectivity issues during cutover.Perform post-migration validation, optimization, right-sizing, monitoring, documentation, and knowledge transfer.Identify workloads that may be better suited for AWS managed services rather than direct VM rehosting.Work collaboratively with AWS, Brooksource delivery teams, customer infrastructure teams, and third-party technology providers throughout the migration lifecycle.Additional Experience:The successful candidate should be comfortable automating repetitive infrastructure and migration activities rather than relying solely on manual administration.Consulting & Communication SkillsLead technical discovery sessions with customer infrastructure teams.Communicate effectively with VMware administrators, application owners, network engineers, security teams, cloud architects, and executive stakeholders.Explain migration risks and recommendations clearly.Translate technical findings into actionable migration plans.Work independently within ambiguous customer environments.Troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues during time-sensitive migration events.Produce detailed technical documentation and migration runbooks.Mentor other engineers participating in migration activities.Preferred Background:7+ years of infrastructure engineering experience5+ years of hands-on VMware experience3+ years of AWS infrastructure or migration experienceDemonstrated VMware-to-AWS migration experienceExperience supporting enterprise-scale or public-sector environmentsExperience participating in AWS Migration Acceleration Program engagements is highly desirable
