The Opportunity: Director of Human Resources Location New York City, NY Reports to Executive Leadership Company Overview A long-established, growth-oriented construction organization is strengthening its human resources capabilities to support a large, distributed workforce and continued operational growth. The environment is hands-on, structured, and operationally focused, with a strong emphasis on safety, compliance, employee development, and long-term workforce stability. Position Overview The company is seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources to lead and enhance core HR functions across the organization, including employee engagement, benefits administration, compliance, performance management, leadership development, and employee relations. This leader will serve as a key partner to executive leadership and field/office personnel, ensuring HR programs and policies support organizational goals while fostering a positive, compliant, and high-performing workplace culture. The role requires a balance of strategic leadership and hands-on execution in a complex, multi-project environment. Key ResponsibilitiesCulture & Employee EngagementSupport and strengthen a positive, inclusive, and high-performing workplace culture across the organizationLead employee engagement, wellness, and internal communication initiatives to improve retention and moraleManage performance review processes, including goal setting and professional development planningSupport onboarding and orientation processes for new hires in partnership with leadershipConduct exit interviews and manage separation processes to identify trends and improvement opportunitiesMaintain accurate employee records and organizational chartsBenefits AdministrationAdminister employee benefits programs including health insurance, retirement plans, and related offeringsServe as the primary point of contact for benefits-related employee supportSupport employees with enrollment, policy education, and benefits updatesMonitor benefits utilization and provide insights for cost and plan optimizationPolicy, Compliance & HR OperationsEnsure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulationsMaintain and update HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook documentationOversee attendance tracking and leave administration (vacation, sick leave, and related programs)Manage employment verification and HR records requestsSupport project-specific compliance programs (e.g., safety or substance testing requirements where applicable)Support EEO reporting and related compliance requirementsMaintain HR documentation systems and internal knowledge platformsLeadership Development & CoachingPartner with leadership to support employee development and succession planning initiativesCoordinate coaching and leadership development programs for managers and high-potential employeesSupport leaders in strengthening management capabilities and team performance Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required 10+ years of progressive HR experience in a similar operational or project-driven environment Strong knowledge of employment law, HR compliance, and benefits administration Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HR information systems HR certifications (PHR, SPHR, CEBS) preferred but not required Work Environment & Travel On-site role based in New York City, NY Regular interaction with both office and field personnel in a structured operational environment Hands-on HR leadership role with high visibility across the organization Travel is expected to be minimal and not a core requirement Compensation Base salary range: $175K-$225K Performance Bonus Opportunity: ~10% annual incentive based on company and individual performance
