This role focuses on the physical design, analysis, and execution of substations up to 345kV, supporting projects from early conceptual development through construction and commissioning.The ideal candidate is a technically strong engineer who brings leadership capability, sound engineering judgment, and a commitment to quality, safety, and mentoring the next generation of engineers.Key ResponsibilitiesSubstation Physical DesignPerform complete physical design of high‑voltage substations in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements, including:General arrangement drawingsEquipment, electrical, and control building layoutsElevation and section viewsCable trench and duct bank designEquipment grounding systems and ground gridsLightning protection systemsConduit and cable tray routingAC and DC station service systemsSubstation area lighting systemsBills of Materials (BOMs)Electrical Studies & AnalysisConduct And/or Oversee Detailed Electrical Calculations And Studies, IncludingSubstation grounding calculations and touch/step voltage analysisPre‑ and post‑energization harmonic studiesShort‑circuit and fault current analysisBus bar mechanical force calculationsLoad flow and reactive power flow analysisHarmonic filter analysisNERC compliance evaluationsProtective relay coordination studiesTransient analysisTransmission slack‑span calculationsCorona performance studiesEquipment Specifications & ProcurementDevelop equipment and material specifications for outdoor switchyard equipment up to 345kVPrepare procurement specifications and design scopes for engineered equipment, including:Vacuum and SF₆ circuit breakersMotor‑operated and manual gang‑operated switchesCurrent and potential transformers (CTs/PTs)Station service transformersInsulators and surge arrestersStation service battery systemsReview, coordinate, and integrate vendor drawings and technical documentationProject Execution & CollaborationCoordinate with vendors to ensure timely delivery of drawings, materials, and equipment in accordance with project schedulesDevelop conceptual and preliminary designs to support planning and cost estimatingPrepare design documentation supporting procurement, construction, and operations/maintenanceParticipate in and/or lead client meetings and job site visitsSupport construction activities and commissioning as neededAdhere to Hargrove’s QA/QC processes across all design deliverablesLeadership & MentorshipProvide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designersSupport the development of best practices and consistency in substation design executionQualificationsRequiredBachelor of Science in Electrical EngineeringActive Professional Engineer (PE) licenseMinimum 10 years of experience in substation physical designProven experience with high‑voltage systems up to 345kVStrong organizational, documentation, and quality control skillsExceptional attention to detailAbility to manage multiple projects and deadlinesExcellent written and verbal communication skillsPreferred Software ExperienceWorking knowledge of one or more of the following:AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD ElectricalBentley MicroStationETAP, SKM PowerTools, or ASPEN OneLinerCYMCAPPLS‑CADD (or comparable transmission line analysis software)Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)Physical RequirementsAbility to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods, as required by project and site activitiesHargrove CultureWe work to create an environment founded on trust, personal integrity, and a “team mentality” so that each person understands the value of their contributions both on a project and company-wide level.
