Adult Education Strong Start Family Literacy Instructors

Summary/Goal Of PositionThe Strong Start Family Literacy Instructors will collaboratively deliver a seven-week intergenerational summer program designed to support incoming kindergarten students and their parents/guardians. The program integrates early childhood education, adult English as a second language (ESL) instruction, parent education, and parent and child together (PACT) activities to strengthen school readiness, build parent capacity, and foster meaningful homeschool connections aligned with Danbury Public Schools. Each instructor will lead their respective instructional component while working as part of a coordinated instructional team to support whole-family learning.Essential Tasks Of The Position (Illustrative Not InclusivePlan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction aligned to assigned role (early childhood, adult ESL, or parent education)Collaborate with instructional team to design and implement integrated family literacy experiences, including joint parentchild activitiesSupport a welcoming, inclusive classroom environment that reflects the cultural and linguistic diversity of participating familiesFor early childhood instructor: implement play-based, literacy-rich instruction to build foundational skills for kindergarten readinessFor adult ESL instructor: deliver standards-based English language instruction focused on English language proficiency standards (ELPS), practical communication, and school partnership and engagementFor parent education instructor: facilitate learning on parenting strategies, school systems, and supporting children's academic successMonitor student and family participation and progress; maintain accurate attendance and required documentationAssume case management responsibilities for ? of adult students to support retention and engagementCommunicate effectively with families to encourage consistent participation and engagementParticipate in program planning, coordination meetings, and reflection to improve program implementationEnsure compliance with all WERACE, district, state, and federal guidelines related to instruction and student recordsPerform other duties as assigned by program leadershipKnowledge, Skills, And AbilitiesKnowledge of family literacy models and intergenerational learning approachesUnderstanding of adult learners and/or early childhood development, depending on roleAbility to deliver differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning needsStrong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly with multilingual learners and familiesAbility to foster a supportive, respectful, and engaging learning environmentFamiliarity with culturally responsive teaching practicesAbility to collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary teamBasic technology skills for instructional delivery and record-keeping Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in education or related fieldAppropriate Certification Or Experience Aligned To PositionEarly childhood instructor: background in early childhood or elementary education required; at least one of the following certifications:(112)- Integrated early childhood/special education, birth-kindergarten AND/OR(305)- Elementary, PK-6 AND/OR(512)- Montessori, primary, birth to kindergarten AND/OR(102)-Remedial reading and remedial language arts, 1-12 AND/OR(111)- Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), pk-12Adult ESL Instructor: background in adult education language acquisition and one of the following certifications:(111)- Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), pk-12 AND/OR(088)- Non-English speaking adultsParent Education Instructor: background in early or elementary education, counseling, social work, or related field preferred; experience working with adult learners, young children, or family engagement programs preferred; one of the following certifications:(305)- Elementary, PK-6 AND/OR(102)-Remedial reading and remedial language arts, 1-12 AND/OR(092)-Intermediate administration or supervision AND/OR(068)- School counselor AND/OR(071)- School social worker AND/OR(112)- Integrated early childhood/special education, birth-kindergarten AND/OR(305)- Elementary, PK-6Strong organizational and communication skills requiredReports ToRegional Director of Adult and Continuing Education and Assistant Director of Family Literacy and Multilingual Programs for Adult EducationWork ScheduleThis program will meet twice per week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from July 7 through August 20, 6:008:00pm. In addition, the instructional and leadership team will participate in a one-hour weekly virtual meeting to support coordination, cohesion, and instructional alignment.
