Job Summary
The Sedation Nurse (RN) will be part of a collaborative team who provides sedation during radiological invasive procedures that require moderate sedation in an outpatient setting. This Registered Nurse is trained and experienced in critical care, emergency and/or peri-anesthesia specialty areas and may be given the responsibility of administration and maintenance of moderate or conscious sedation in the presence, and by the order of a supervising/performing radiologist. The Sedation Nurse administering moderate sedation/conscious sedation has the knowledge and experience with medications used and skills to assess, interpret and intervene in the event of an adverse patient complication. They watch for and treat side effects such as difficulty breathing, maintaining a patent airway, patient agitation, cardiac stability and monitoring for other adverse patient responses. They may be asked to assist/identify patients who may have trouble regaining consciousness.
The Sedation Nurse will be responsible for collaborating with the physician as to procedure appropriateness and review of patient charts including labs, ASA score, patient orders and patient comorbidities. This position is also responsible to participate in pre-procedure checklists, participate obtaining informed consent process, providing pre and post procedure patient care and education and monitoring at risk patients who may or may not receive sedation during imaging exams/procedures. The Sedation Nurse will be responsible for maintaining medication safety integrity and ensuring appropriate medication tracking and reconciliation. Non-patient care related duties may include participation in infection control initiatives, inventory management, meeting facility accreditation requirements and participating in patient safety programs. Essential Duties
This position requires regular reliable attendance. This position requires a high level of attention to detail and accuracy, knowledge, and confidentiality. Other duties as assigned.
1. Administering conscious sedation per competency under the direction of a provider.
2. Assessing patients before, during, and after administration of conscious sedation and providing appropriate care.
3. Ensuring all equipment is functioning before use and following manufacturer guidelines.
4. Monitoring patient responses during sedation and maintaining airway patency and cardiovascular stability.
5. Evaluating patients prior to moderate sedation and managing any complications during procedures.
6. Performing, documenting and maintaining medication reconciliation and tracking in compliance with State and facility accreditation standards.
7. Performing post-operative tasks, such as administering medication, holding vascular access pressure or changing dressings.
8. Checking and updating patient files, charts and medical records.
9. Collaborating with CRNA/anesthesiologists, physicians and other members of the patient care team.
10. Providing comfort and answering questions pre and post procedure; including participating in informed consent.
11. Educating patients and their families regarding pre- and post-surgery care
12. Proficiency with EMR, charting and maintaining medical records as it pertains to sedation documentation as well as recovery documentation.
13. Performs pre procedure and post procedure follow-up calls as instructed.
14. Answer and triage phone calls from patients, referring offices and co-workers regarding scheduled procedures.
15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with referring physicians and nurses, patients and co-workers.
16. Ability to work cohesively and cooperatively with other members of radiology team including technologists, medical assistants, non-physician providers, scheduling and billing services is essential.
17. Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
A minimum of two years’ experience as a radiology moderate sedation nurse or critical care nurse required; specific experience with out-patient radiology services preferred. Associates of Nursing degree and current State of Oregon nursing license required. ACLS required. Must be detail oriented, able to exercise good judgement and work under pressure. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; organization and multi-tasking skills. Strong time and stress management skills. Possess strong customer service and interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Typical Physical Demands

Must be able to remain in a standing position for up to 95% of a workday.
Sit-to-stand desks are available to all employees if the workstation has space to accommodate without obstruction to patients.
Move, Transport
Frequently assists in patient mobility. May often transport patients in wheelchairs, on a gurney, using a Hoyer Lift or Gimme-A-Lift device. Often transports diagnostic devices and patient care supplies of varying weights and occasionally moves paper/boxes of varying weights, up to 50 pounds.
Move or Transverse
Constantly moves about the inside of the office/exam rooms for patient care and to access supplies and various diagnostic/office machinery, etc.

Constantly operates diagnostic machines and/or other office productivity machinery, such as a computer, iPad, copy machine, printer, etc.

Frequently communicate with physicians, patients and coworkers who have questions about exams, preparations, or other patient care needs.
Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

Must be able to visually see patient to position or assist and identify changes in patient’s wellbeing.
Must have the ability to read orders or other communications on the patient’s and clinic’s behalf.
Exposure to work
Normally work indoors.
Occasionally will take patients outdoors in the event we are using mobile scanners or transporting items to laboratories.
