Established in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver, Best Buddies has expanded to nearly 1,500 chapters in 50 states and 50 countries, positively impacting over 700,000 people each year. Through its eight formal programs, Best Buddies enables individuals with IDD to secure meaningful employment, develop leadership skills, live independently, and form lasting friendships. The organization’s devoted volunteers provide significant community support, amounting to services valued at more than $155 million annually. Role Description Best Buddies is seeking a State Director for Virginia & DC to lead and execute initiatives that advance the organization’s mission in the region. This is a full-time hybrid role based in Vienna, VA, with flexibility for some remote work. The State Director will oversee program development and expansion, manage state staff and volunteers, cultivate partnerships and donors, and represent the organization in local, regional, and national events. Key responsibilities include developing strategies to grow Best Buddies programs, managing budgets and fundraising efforts, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies and standards while working closely with a diverse range of stakeholders. Qualifications Proven leadership, strategic planning, and team management abilitiesExperience with fundraising, donor development, and partnership cultivationProficiency in program management and process improvementStrong communication, public speaking, and relationship-building skillsCommitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and the mission of empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilitiesProficiency in office software such as Microsoft Office Suite and virtual meeting toolsA bachelor’s degree in a related field and prior nonprofit leadership or community engagement experience preferredAbility to work independently while collaborating effectively with remote teamsWillingness to travel within Virginia and DC, as required, to support events and community engagement
