Commissioning Engineer
We're looking for a Commissioning Engineer to join our growing team supporting critical substation protection and control systems. This role is ideal for early-career engineers or recent graduates with a strong foundation in electrical engineering, power systems, or related fields. You'll work alongside experienced field personnel to test, troubleshoot, and commission relays, communication systems, and power equipment across utility, industrial, and energy infrastructure sites.What You'll Do:Test, calibrate, and troubleshoot protection and control relays (electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor)Verify voltage/current inputs, SCADA metering, local alarms, and control switch functionalityAssist with commissioning of substations and high-voltage equipment, including pilot channel systems (e.g., power line carrier, pilot wire, fiber optic, CVTs, line traps)Perform routine maintenance and repairs of substation relaying and control equipmentPlan and complete field test activities safely, accurately, and on scheduleLearn and apply standard test procedures for various substation componentsMaintain clear and professional communication with coworkers, customers, and managementInterpret and follow specifications, diagrams, and field documentationFollow strict safety and PPE usage protocols due to noise, electrical hazards, and elevated work areasPerform fieldwork in both indoor and outdoor environmentsThe Experience We're Looking For:5+ years of hands-on experience performing field testing, commissioning, calibration, or troubleshooting of protection and control systems in substation environments.Understanding of three-phase power systems, SCADA, relay testing, and electrical schematicsFamiliarity with test equipment, wiring diagrams, and relay calibration proceduresExperience with substation construction, data integration, or automation systems is a plusProficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)Additional Requirements:Willing and able to travel at least 50% with overnight stays as neededBachelor's degree in Electrical Technology, Power Systems Engineering, or Mechanical EngineeringFlexible to work nights, weekends, and holidays based on client/project demandsValid driver's licenseMust successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug testsMust complete annual safety training (travel may be required for training)Legally authorized to work in the United StatesRequires good vision, hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environmentsBonus Points for:Hands-on experience with testing, commissioning, or troubleshooting protection and control systemsExperience with SCADA, integration/automation systems, or substation commissioningExposure to both union and non-union environmentsWhy Join RMS Energy:We're not just another power services company.
