Substation Electrical Engineer
Job Description: This Electrical Engineer will support day‑to‑day substation maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment replacement projects in a brownfield environment. The role focuses on like‑for‑like replacements and upgrades rather than greenfield design and requires strong collaboration with construction crews, maintenance teams, and internal stakeholders.Engineers will initiate projects, develop scoped work packages, order materials, coordinate field execution, and ensure safe and timely completion of substation activities.Key ResponsibilitiesLead and support replacement and upgrade projects for substation equipment including: Breakers, switches, transformers, relays, bushings, and arrestersPerform substation troubleshooting and field investigationsDevelop and refine scoped work packages for brownfield maintenance and replacement projectsCreate and process material requisitions and coordinate procurementAdjust and apply existing engineering designs as required (no greenfield design work)Coordinate with construction crews, substation maintenance teams, and other stakeholdersManage schedules, track progress, and follow up on active projectsParticipate in onsite substation visits and provide field support during executionEnsure consistent communication across engineering, construction, and operations teamsInvestigate root causes of failures and recommend improvementsEnsure compliance with safety requirements and engineering standardsSafety RequirementsWork performed in energized substation environmentsPPE required (e.g., steel‑toe shoes); typically provided by contracting company and expensableExposure to outdoor conditions; weather exposure expected Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (required)Strong knowledge of or willingness to work with substation equipmentExperience or familiarity with brownfield maintenance and replacement workflowsAbility to coordinate projects, order materials, and engage with multiple stakeholdersStrong problem‑solving skills and professional communication abilities Preferred / Nice‑to‑Have Qualifications~5+ years of experience (mid‑level role)Colorado Professional Engineer (PE) preferred (especially for senior‑level candidates)Substation engineering or design experienceExperience with: SAPProjectWiseBasic PLC / logic programming (plus, not required)What they will be doing/ working on: In simple terms, this person keeps electrical substations running safely and reliably.What they’ll actually be doing day to day:Replacing and upgrading old substation equipment (like breakers, transformers, switches)Figuring out what’s wrong when equipment or systems have issuesPlanning the work – deciding what needs to be replaced, how it will be done, and what materials are neededOrdering equipment and partsVisiting substations to check conditions, support crews, and confirm work is done correctlyCoordinating with field crews, maintenance teams, and other engineersMaking small design updates to existing systems (not designing brand‑new substations)Following up on projects to make sure everything is completed safely and on schedule
