Driver Training Instructor/Program Helper
Job Overview
TanMar Companies is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Driver Training Instructor & Program Developer to help build and lead a comprehensive company-wide driver training program.
Working directly with the Safety Director, this individual will help develop a practical, hands-on curriculum for employees operating a variety of company vehicles, including DOT/CDL vehicles, Non-DOT vehicles, company pickups, and passenger vans.
We are looking for an instructor who knows how to teach driving—both in the classroom and behind the wheel. The ideal candidate will be able to turn real-world driving experience into effective training, demonstrate proper techniques, evaluate driver performance, and coach employees at all experience levels.
Key Responsibilities
* Work with the Safety Director to develop, implement, and continuously improve the company driver training program.
* Develop lesson plans, presentations, practical exercises, and driver evaluation materials.
* Conduct classroom and behind-the-wheel training for DOT/CDL and Non-DOT drivers.
* Teach defensive driving, hazard recognition, following distance, space and speed management, backing, parking, merging, intersection awareness, and accident-prevention techniques.
* Conduct road tests, ride-alongs, skills assessments, and driver evaluations.
* Provide hands-on coaching and corrective instruction to improve driver performance.
* Develop and conduct new-driver, refresher, and remedial training.
* Provide targeted retraining following accidents, preventable incidents, or identified driving concerns.
* Review driving trends and incidents to identify opportunities for additional training.
* Maintain accurate training and driver-evaluation records.
* Travel to company locations to conduct training as needed.
Qualifications
* Professional experience as a Driver Instructor, CDL Instructor, Fleet Driver Trainer, Defensive Driving Instructor, or similar role.
* Experience providing classroom and behind-the-wheel driver instruction.
* Experience developing or contributing to driver-training curriculum.
* Strong knowledge of defensive-driving techniques, hazard recognition, and accident prevention.
* Ability to effectively teach and coach drivers with varying levels of experience.
* Experience conducting road tests and driver evaluations.
* Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
* Working knowledge of commercial vehicle operations and applicable DOT/FMCSA requirements.
* Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
* CDL strongly preferred.
* Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
* Ability to successfully complete required pre-employment screening.
Preferred Experience
Experience with Smith System® or similar defensive-driving programs, commercial driver training, corporate fleet training, CDL schools, oilfield/industrial driving, or driver-training curriculum development is highly preferred.
