Tool Room Machinist

MachinistPlan, layout and perform a variety of machining and assembly operations to fabricate tooling, jigs and fixtures, meeting exacting tolerances and specifications. May also sharpen and grind various types of cutters and form tools.Essential functions include fabricating tools for new and existing jobs by reading blueprints, selecting and securing fixtures and tools, calculating and setting controls, starting and observing machine operations, and verifying conformance of finished work piece to specifications. Repair damaged tools and gages by diagnosing tooling out of tolerance specifications. Prototyping and production includes fitting and assembling parts into complete assembly, verifying dimensions and alignment, installing machined replacement parts, developing specifications, designing and fabricating tools and gauges, and running production parts when necessary. Responsible for supporting the Schafer business process by maintaining productivity, measuring and marking dimensions, reducing downtime, maintaining the 6S program, performing maintenance and repairs, troubleshooting production machines, conferring with engineers and production personnel, following ISO and Schafer procedures.Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the company by channeling problems and complaints, supporting all Schafer policies and procedures, reporting to supervisor when assignments cannot be completed, providing input and assistance with quality improvements, resolving problems, performing other job-related duties, helping evaluate job applicants, passing along vital information in the logbook, training new personnel, and assisting and training in other areas as needed.Knowledge, skills, and abilities include physical ability and stamina, verbal and written communication skills, four-year apprenticeship, five plus years of experience, ability to communicate in English, computer use, associate's degree, ability to read and interpret blueprints, knowledge of GD&T, operating lathes, vertical mills, grinders, gages, and saws, metallurgy knowledge, and familiarity with design, part layout, and process planning.Working conditions include an air conditioned/heated manufacturing facility with possible exposure to noise, dust, fumes, physical, chemical, and biohazards, solvents, oils, and detergents. This job is to be performed at the designated facility 100% of the time unless directed otherwise by manager/supervisor.
