Job Details:Mechanical Technician – Welding / Fabrication / Equipment AssemblyLocation: Irondale, AL (On-site)Travel: Limited, with occasional support for projects and site installationsPosition OverviewA growing industrial manufacturer is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Technician with strong real-world welding and fabrication experience to support the build, assembly, maintenance, and installation of custom industrial automation equipment. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with fabricated equipment, mechanical assembly, troubleshooting, and collaborating with engineering and production teams to improve equipment functionality and fitment.The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in fabrication and welding, along with the ability to assemble custom machinery and production systems. Experience with painting using HVLP or conventional spray applications is a plus, though training can be provided in that area.Core ResponsibilitiesWelding, Fabrication & Mechanical AssemblyInterpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, schematics, and mechanical layoutsPerform MIG, TIG, and/or Stick welding on structural components, frames, piping, and custom equipment assembliesFabricate, assemble, and modify custom automation and industrial equipmentAssemble mechanical systems and production equipment using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instrumentsRoute and secure pneumatic tubing and electrical cables during equipment assemblyWork closely with engineers and technicians to identify and resolve fitment, alignment, or assembly issuesEnsure proper alignment, tolerances, fit-up, and overall build quality during fabrication and assembly processesEquipment Assembly & Automation SupportAssemble custom automation equipment and mechanical subassembliesInstall hardware, brackets, guards, actuators, cylinders, and machine componentsAssist with integration of pneumatic systems into custom machinery and production equipmentSupport equipment testing, operational validation, and startup activitiesCollaborate with fabrication, engineering, and production teams to improve equipment builds and assembly efficiencyMulti-Craft Maintenance & Equipment ReliabilityPerform preventive and corrective maintenance on industrial equipment and machineryTroubleshoot and repair mechanical and pneumatic systemsReplace bearings, gearboxes, belts, chains, valves, seals, and related mechanical componentsInspect equipment for wear, leaks, vibration, and operational issuesSupport plant uptime and continuous improvement initiativesPneumatics & Industrial SystemsInstall and troubleshoot pneumatic tubing, regulators, valves, actuators, and compressed air systemsRead and interpret pneumatic schematics and layoutsAssist with system testing, pressure checks, and troubleshooting activitiesSupport integration of pneumatic controls into automated production systemsInstallation, Startup & Field SupportAssist with equipment installation, relocation, teardown, and startup activitiesPerform field modifications, repairs, and equipment adjustments as neededSupport commissioning, operational testing, and final system validationCollaborate with maintenance, engineering, and production teams during startup and installation activitiesDocumentation & SafetyMaintain accurate maintenance, repair, and fabrication recordsDocument completed work, inspections, and parts usageFollow OSHA regulations, plant safety procedures, and lockout/tagout practicesMaintain a clean, organized, and safe work environmentQualificationsEducationTechnical training, trade school, or equivalent hands-on industrial experience preferredExperienceAt least 3 years of experience in welding, fabrication, mechanical assembly, or industrial maintenanceExperience building or assembling custom equipment, machinery, or automation systems preferredExperience in manufacturing, industrial fabrication, or custom equipment environments strongly preferredTechnical SkillsStrong welding and fabrication skills with hands-on shop experienceAbility to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and pneumatic schematicsExperience assembling mechanical equipment and fastening custom components togetherKnowledge of pneumatics, compressed air systems, and mechanical assembly practicesFamiliarity with routing pneumatic tubing and electrical cables on equipment buildsProficiency with hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, grinders, and precision measuring toolsBasic understanding of hydraulics or industrial automation systems is a plusExperience with HVLP or conventional spray painting applications is a plus (training available)Preferred BackgroundExperience supporting custom machinery, automation equipment, or industrial production systemsFamiliarity with compressors, air systems, and pneumatic controlsExperience working in fast-paced fabrication or manufacturing environmentsStrong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail during equipment assembly and fitmentCertifications (Preferred)Welding certificationsOSHA 10 or OSHA 30Forklift or lift operation certificationWork EnvironmentHands-on role in a fabrication
