Scientific Communications Specialist

Job DescriptionResearches, writes and / or edits high-level communications, publications, and / or reports with complex or sensitive subject matter to audiences that are either broad or highly influential. Requires subject-matter expertise and an in-depth understanding of the audience and the communication strategies that will best serve the institution with that audience. Work is of considerable difficulty and may require political acumen and sensitivity. Ensures alignment with UCSF digital and editorial policies and brand identity standards as posted at identity.ucsf.edu.Responsibilities% of timeEssential Function (Yes/No)Key Responsibilities (To be completed by Supervisor)50 Researches, writes, and edits high-level communications, publications, and / or reports with complex or sensitive subject matter; assignments may include proposals, articles for publications, briefing materials, talking points, press releases, and web sit0 Consults with and advises clients regarding their communications needs10 May develop publications or web content to meet communication needs30 Determines content and sources for publications and written work, conducts research and interviews (with multiple and sometimes conflicting sources), and ensures accuracy, clarity, and effectiveness of writing0 May edit and oversee design and production of a variety of print and online material0 May oversee or lead staff; hire, assign, and oversee freelance staff10 Assesses submitted manuscripts and recommends materials to be published, including working with authors on developing material for publication0 May respond to media inquiries, directing reporters to location media relations officers and other subject-matter experts as appropriateQualificationsRequired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in related area Advanced knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation and advanced skills to write clear, lively, engaging, compelling and effective copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and the broader publicAdvanced knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelinesAdvanced knowledge of issues in higher education, a specialized academic discipline or field and / or health sciencesAdvanced skill in taking initiative to creatively identify and pitch story ideas to senior management and clientsAdvanced research and fact verification skillsAdvanced interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skillsAdvanced analytical and critical thinking skillsSkill to maintain absolute confidentialityOver 10 years of experience in writing/editing articles and peer-reviewed journals related to radiology and imaging scienceOver 10 years of experience as an academic writer/editorPreferred QualificationsMaster of Science in JournalismAdvanced, in-depth knowledge of the location, including its mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policiesKnowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and / or web productionAdvanced project management, organizational and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills
