Safety Programs Engineer
Industry: Electric Aviation / Advanced Air Mobility
About:
This role sits within a next-generation electric aircraft programme focused on embedding safety at the core of both product development and operational lifecycle activities.
The organisation is developing and scaling a comprehensive Safety Management System (SMS) and Continued Operational Safety (COS) framework to support certification and long-term operational integrity. This includes integrating safety risk management across engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and in-service operations.
The position is suited to engineers who operate comfortably across both technical and operational domains, with a focus on building practical, scalable safety processes. The work involves shaping safety culture, defining frameworks, and ensuring alignment with evolving regulatory expectations in a fast-moving aerospace environment.
Responsibilities:
Support the development and continuous improvement of Safety Management System (SMS) and Continued Operational Safety (COS) programmes
Develop and maintain safety documentation including policies, manuals, and process definitions
Define and implement safety analysis methodologies aligned with industry standards and regulatory guidance
Lead hazard identification activities, safety risk assessments, and mitigation strategy development across engineering and operational domains
Support the assessment and triage of in-service safety reports, identifying trends and feeding insights back into development and operational processes
Contribute to the development and tracking of safety-related corrective action plans
Define and monitor safety performance metrics, analysing data to identify emerging risks and control effectiveness
Support regulatory engagement activities, including preparation for oversight and compliance reviews
Develop and deliver safety training to drive adoption of safety processes and promote a strong safety culture
Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and customer support teams
Act as a subject matter resource for SMS and COS processes, supporting internal teams with best practices
Required Experience & Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Aerospace, Systems Engineering, or related technical discipline
5–10 years of experience in aerospace, product safety, or systems engineering environments
Experience supporting the development and implementation of safety processes or programmes
Strong understanding of safety risk management principles, including hazard identification and risk assessment
Experience working cross-functionally across engineering and operational teams
Ability to document technical processes, develop work instructions, and communicate effectively across diverse stakeholders
Experience facilitating technical discussions and capturing safety or engineering analyses
Desirable / Additional Qualifications:
Direct experience working within a Safety Management System (SMS) in an aerospace environment
Familiarity with Continued Operational Safety (COS) processes and in-service safety management
Knowledge of FAA regulatory frameworks including 14 CFR Part 5 and Part 21.3
Experience with hazard analysis methodologies and safety investigation processes
Exposure to industry standards such as ARP4754A, ARP4761, or equivalent safety frameworks
Experience working with safety reporting systems, in-service data, or corrective action tracking tools
Background supporting regulatory compliance activities or certification programmes
Drive the development of safety systems and processes that underpin the next generation of electric aircraft operations. Send your resume to e.walker@apera.co.
