Location: 100% on site in Oakland
Position Summary
We are seeking a Controller for a company in Oakland that will serve as a key financial leader responsible for directing the organization's accounting operations and ensuring the integrity of its financial reporting. This role oversees the full spectrum of accounting activities, including operational finance, reporting accuracy, compliance, and internal controls. The Controller establishes and maintains robust financial processes, systems, and safeguards that protect company assets and support reliable, GAAP-compliant reporting.
In addition to leading accounting operations, this role contributes to broader financial strategy, supports company-wide planning initiatives, and plays an active role in strengthening financial performance. The Controller partners cross-functionally with leadership-including Operations, Transportation, and Human Resources-to align financial objectives with business priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Oversight
Direct all accounting functions across the organization, including affiliated entities and subsidiaries
Lead, develop, and mentor the accounting team, fostering a high-performance environment
Ensure accurate and timely completion of monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
Oversee preparation and distribution of financial statements and management reporting
Compliance, Controls & Risk Management
Establish, refine, and enforce internal controls to safeguard company assets and improve reporting accuracy
Ensure adherence to GAAP and all applicable regulatory, tax, and financial requirements
Partner with external auditors and tax advisors; coordinate audits and filings as required
Continuously evaluate financial processes to identify risks and implement corrective actions
Financial Reporting & Analysis
Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and financial outputs
Analyze financial results, key performance indicators, and operational metrics to provide insight and recommendations
Deliver forward-looking financial forecasts highlighting trends in revenue, costs, and profitability
Budgeting & Strategic Planning
Lead the annual budgeting process from development through finalization and reporting integration
Monitor performance against budget and provide actionable variance analysis
Support long-term financial planning and strategic decision-making initiatives
Operational Finance Management
Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable processes to ensure efficiency and accuracy
Manage departmental budgets and resource allocation
Maintain strong working relationships with customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders
Team Development & Process Improvement
Define clear performance expectations and measurable goals for team members
Conduct performance reviews and implement ongoing development and training programs
Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and recommend process enhancements
Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence
Collaboration & Communication
Provide regular financial updates and insights to executive leadership, including the CFO
Collaborate with cross-functional leadership to align financial and operational priorities
Communicate effectively across all levels of the organization, from frontline employees to senior management
Additional Responsibilities
Support and implement finance-related policies in partnership with leadership
Maintain organized financial records and documentation systems
Ensure adherence to workplace safety standards within the department
Travel as needed to support operations in Oakland and San Jose, CA
Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
6-8+ years of progressive experience in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role
Strong background in budgeting, forecasting, and financial management
Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop high-performing teams
In-depth knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting standards, and regulatory requirements
At least 5 years of experience in cost, financial, or managerial accounting
Proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Office tools
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences
Self-directed, results-oriented, and capable of working with minimal oversight
Preferred
Industry experience in manufacturing, industrial services, or waste/recycling operations
Familiarity with mid-market ERP systems, including NetSuite and QuickBooks
Professional certification such as CPA, CMA, or CFM
