Join the Durham VA Health Care System Emergency Department Team! Recruiting for multiple RNs in the Emergency Department. The Emergency Department(ED) is a level I unit with 27 beds, 2 triage rooms, with 4 beds designated for high-risk psychiatry patients.The ED primarily cares for Veterans and occasional humanitarian persons seeking emergent care. Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants provide care in collaboration with other disciplines to offer a seamless transition of care throughout the VA continuum of care. The census of patients seeking the ED services is an average of 30,000 patients per year. The registered nurse will provide nursing care and monitoring of Emergency Department patients seeking care, as well as those admitted and waiting for bed assignment. The nurses assigned to this unit will need skills in triage, emergent assessment and treatment of those seeking medical and psychiatric care, including admission assessments, psychiatric close monitoring, and CIWA protocols.Functions or scope of assigned duties include but are not limited to:The Emergency Department Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing care. They assess the patient by collecting pertinent data or information, including the triage of patients based on the five-level triage system to prioritize patients that require more immediate care. They use the assessment data to determine diagnoses, problems, or other concerns. They will identify expected outcomes to develop a collaborative and individualized plan for each patient. The Emergency Department Registered Nurse will implement that plan, including care coordination, health teaching, and health promotion. They evaluate the progress toward achieving the expected goal and outcomes and adjusts the plan as necessary.Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. This clinical position includes a physicality normally associated with direct patient care: the physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, stooping, walking, reaching, repetitive motion, and climbing stairs. The mental/sensory requirements include logical thinking, processing and retaining information, reading, recall, reasoning, complex problem solving, hearing, clear distinct speech, writing, keyboarding, use of a telephone, and use of video connectivity. This position requires face-to-face patient care, use of available IT software and equipment for virtual visits, and timely and accurate navigation of and documentation in electronic medical records.The environment's pace can vary from steady to fast-paced requiring handling multiple priorities in a single day, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes-noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials. This position involved working with persons with communication difficulties, cognitive loss including dementia, behavioral challenges, altered mentation and caregivers that are stressed. Collaboration with multiple stakeholders is essential.
