Position Title: Mechanical EngineerDepartment: EngineeringLast Revised: 1/2026Reports To: Engineering ManagerPosition PurposeThe Mechanical Design Engineer plays a key role in turning ideas into buildable, shippable solutions. This position is responsible for developing innovative mechanical designs that meet customer needs, project budgets, and production requirements. Working from initial concepts through final release, Design Engineers collaborate closely with manufacturing, project teams, and customers to deliver high-quality solutions that are efficient to assemble, cost-effective to produce, and ready for real-world use.At APT, no two projects are the same. Ideal candidates thrive in a fast-paced, custom-engineering environment where priorities can shift quickly, and engineers are challenged to design for a wide variety of applications. Success in this role requires adaptability, creativity, and the ability to pivot smoothly between different industries, customer needs, and mechanical systems while maintaining a high standard of quality and execution.Successful engineers in this role combine inventive problem-solving with practical design expertise-developing solutions that meet or exceed performance criteria while staying on schedule and within budget.Job Functions and ResponsibilitiesDesign & Engineering DevelopmentDesign mechanical systems, assemblies, and components for a wide variety of industrial machineryTranslate customer requirements, concepts, and budgets into functional, manufacturable designsCreate 3D models, layouts, and engineering drawings using CAD software (SolidWorks)Project ExecutionManage assigned design tasks to meet project schedules, cost targets, and performance goalsSupport multiple projects at once and pivot quickly as priorities changeParticipate in design reviews and provide technical input throughout the project lifecycleManufacturing & Assembly SupportEnsure designs are practical to assemble, test, ship, and serviceCollaborate closely with fabrication, machining, and assembly teams to resolve design or build issuesRelease accurate bills of materials (BOMs), drawings, and documentation for productionProblem Solving & Continuous ImprovementTroubleshoot mechanical challenges during build and installation phasesIdentify opportunities to improve designs for cost, quality, reliability, and ease of manufacturingApply engineering best practices and standards to ensure safe and effective solutionsCross-Functional CollaborationWork with project managers, electrical/controls engineers, and customers to deliver complete systemsCommunicate design intent clearly through drawings, documentation, and team discussionsSupport customer meetings, project updates, and technical decision-makingGrowth & LeadershipMentor junior engineers, apprentices, and detailersLead complex, high-dollar engineering projects and guide design teamsDrive technical strategy and ensure engineering excellence across programsAdditional Expectations* Availability of some expected travel for project meetings, and occasional installationassistance.* Availability to respond to customer equipment issues due to customer productionrequirements.* Availability to attend planned training as needed.AbilitiesCreative, self-motivated, and focused.Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.Able to successfully give and receive constructive feedback.Ability to work under high-pressure, time sensitive deadlines.Exhibits sound reasoning skills (abductive, inductive, and deductive).Exhibits sound decision-making skills (able to be decisive and often makes best business decisions).Education and ExperienceBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experienceExposure/Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & TolerancingUnderstanding of Industrial Math (Trigonometry and Geometry)Machine Building Experience -some level of exposure to machining, welding, or industrial equipment.ClassificationFull-Time, ExemptSupervisory ResponsibilitiesThis position has no supervisory responsibilities.Physical RequirementsAble to sit for 4-6 hours at a timeAble to stand, squat, bend over, pick up 20lbs repeatedly and up to 50lbs occasionallyAble to manually operate small hand tools and larger power toolsAble to accurately see fine details in prints, on computer, or in machines (unaided or with glasses, magnifying tools, etc.)Tools and TechnologyMust be proficient in computer use and the Microsoft Office SuiteMust have experience with 3D Modeling Software Solid WorksMust be familiar with ERP Software
