We are determined: above all else, we are on a relentlessquest to make our community stronger beginning with you.POSITION SUMMARY:Under the direction of the Youth Development Director and the established policies and goals ofthe YMCA, the Academic Achievement Specialist is responsible for providing small group tutoringand homework assistance in math and reading to children in grades K-6 that attend theprogram. Instruction and activities are designed expressly to promote subject mastery, developgrade-level competencies and to teach study skills. Tutoring services are provided during theduration of the program. The YMCA mission is the highest priority and its goals for thesechildren and their families are of the utmost importance.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The Academic Achievement Specialist must understand and be willing to learn the necessaryskills required for the successful completion of duties including:1. Help students achieve a better understanding of specific subject material and inimproving academic capabilities in designated areas2. Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success. Identify studentsexperiencing difficulties and provide encouragement and alternatives3. Provide academic assistance to assigned students, individually or in a small groupsetting.4. Prepare for tutoring sessions, review class material, discuss the text, predict testquestions, formulate ideas for materials, or work on solutions to problems5. Utilize the resources of the program in order to assist the student(s) in educationalendeavors6. Document, track and maintain daily progress and academic records of assigned students.Provide feedback regarding student's progress as well as behavior7. Acknowledge student efforts, accomplishments and progress8. Integrate an asset-based positive youth development approach in the tutoring sessions9. Assist students in developing self-confidence, raising self-concept, and reducing anxietyor fear of failure in academic work10. Work with students to develop a high level of motivation in academic areas and positiveattitudes toward learning and studying11. Uphold the association's child protection policies, child abuse and neglect guidelines, andproper reporting procedures at all times12. Help to facilitate a positive program environment that develops self-control in childrenthrough the use of positive guidance techniques13. Demonstrate appropriate decision-making abilities14. Demonstrate a working knowledge of YMCA mission, values, purpose, and goals. Strivesfor the highest standards of program excellence15. Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor16. Report any occurrence to Site Director immediately and fills out appropriate paperworkneeded before the end of the work day that the occurrence happened17. Maintain open lines of communication between parents-self-children-supervisor andprogram18. Perform duties to the benefit of the YMCA and the welfare of its participants19. Incorporate the five core values: respect, responsibility, honesty, caring, and faith into allaspects of the program and daily activitiesRequirements:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:? Minimum 21 years or older? Minimum of 60 semester hours from a college or university in Education; Pre K – 6Virginia State teaching license preferred? Current CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to certify within 60 days of employment)? Clear criminal background checks including Child Protective Services? Ability to communicate and work effectively with groups of children and their parents in aloving yet professional manner? Demonstrated knowledge and maturity to observe children's behavior, assess itsappropriateness, enforce appropriate safety practices and emergency procedures, andapply appropriate behavior-management techniques? Ability to manage the daily administrative, program-related and supervisoryresponsibilities of the school-age childcare programPHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met byan employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to:1. May be required to walk, stand, run, kneel, climb and stoop.2. Must be able to sit on the floor and get back up3. Continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-tasking.4. Must be able to lift, pull and pull up to 50 pounds5. Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time6. Must be physically able to successfully complete required certifications7. Occasionally work in outside weather conditions, and is occasionally exposed to wet, coldand/or humid conditions.8. May periodically be exposed to cleaning supplies9.
