Ensures specimens are correctly labeled and orders are received properly. Processes and prepares laboratory specimens for testing, including separating specimens by centrifugation. May receive and set up primary specimen cultures, inoculating petri dishes for bacterial growth. May document equipment temperatures, perform preventative maintenance, and ensure proper functioning of laboratory equipment. Monitors reference lab reports and requests results that are overdue. Maintains appropriate inventory levels and places supply orders as needed. Performs desk duties, including faxing results, answering phones, reprinting labels, and rescheduling recollects. Assists with staff schedule preparation and cross-training within the laboratory. Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. May perform cytopreparatory staining and accessions surgical cases with knowledge of anatomy. May perform blood and/or blood component processing, storing, shipping, modifying and selecting compatible products using a validated Transfusion Information System. May perform point of care testing, and associated, quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation and result reporting. Receives, processes, and transports patient specimens, including centrifugation and aliquoting sample types. May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment. Mentors, trains new staff and students, and performs competency, acting as a preceptor when assigned. [Required]- Must be able to read, write, speak, and have good comprehension of conversational English [Required]- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office [Required]- Up-to-date knowledge of blood collector equipment, anticoagulants, special precautions, and interferences- Ability to implement aseptic technique principles- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, infection control, specimen processing, medical terminology, anatomic terminology, first aid, and safety practices- Ability to manage and guide phlebotomists and resolve issues that may emerge- Ability to read and interpret medical documents, such as safety regulations, operation guidelines, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals- Ability to educate and train new staff in medical laboratory settings- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification if required by facility- Knowledge of laboratory procedures and medical diagnostic laboratory tests including pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases [Required]- Ability to use laboratory equipment and critical thinking skills to troubleshoot equipment issues [Required]- Use laboratory information systems [Required]- Vocabulary to include medical terminology [Required]- Critical-thinking / problem-solving skills [Required]- Verbal and written communication skills [Required]- Teamwork, tact and conflict resolution skills [Required]- Organizational / multitasking skills [Required]- Use of electronic communications (i.e., email) [Required]- Ability to respond appropriately to buzzers, bells, flashing lights, and pagers.
