SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD
Position is open until filledGENERAL DESCRIPTIONThis is a responsible position involving the directing of traffic and children. Works independently and is responsible for all aspects of child safety while on duty. Crossing guards provide safe crossings of the roadways and model appropriate street skills and behavior for children.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESRegular and punctual attendance.Directs traffic and children for safe crossing of streets.Directs traffic and children for safe boarding and deboarding of school busses.Reports problems of child safety such as bullying, aggression, dangerous drivers and other safety hazards to Supervisor.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESMust have some understanding of children and their actions.Must be able to exercise good judgement and react quickly if necessary.Requires the ability to communicate with children and apply common sense in the instances regarding the interruption of the flow of traffic.Some knowledge of public safety and general first aid a plus.Knowledge of cell phone or two way radio.Must have a keen alertness to surroundings and possess an excellent attitude and work ethic.Ability to deal with the public and respond to inquiries in a tactful and courteous manner.QUALIFICATIONSMust have high school diploma.TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USEDMust wear safety vest and use assigned safety gear such as handheld signs.PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand for long periods of time - walk, talk, observe and listen. The employee must be able to stand unassisted for periods of time while having both hands free simultaneously for traffic control. The employee is frequently required to raise both arms and hands above the shoulders for short periods of time while holding/displaying a handheld sign to conduct traffic control. Specific vision and hearing abilities required by this job include close, distant and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus and hear various dangers to children crossing i.e. cars, trucks, sirens, etc. The employee must be able to comprehend training procedures and the assignment directives.
