DescriptionThe Scientist lll - Metrologist, independently evaluates, selects, and applies engineering scientific techniques, procedures, and methodologies and criteria to measurement and/or calibration responsibilities of the Measurement Standards & Calibration Laboratories (MS&L). Assist technicians in special, highly technical or unique measurements. Serves as primary laboratory measurement assurance program technical lead. Solves calibration/measurement problems and questions from the laboratory technical staff.Works under the general guidance from a Program Manager and in direct support of other Laboratory Management Staff. Assignments are received in objective oriented terms. Provides guidance to subordinates based on organizational goals and company policy. Independently performs project assignments and is responsible to the Program Manager. Work is reviewed in terms of meeting the organization's objectives, schedules and financial goals.Primary Duties And ResponsibilitiesResearch, evaluate, and implement improvements in laboratory measurement processes.Calculates total measurement system accuracy/uncertainty by determining and properly combining system component accuracies/uncertainties. Uses mathematical skills/statistical techniques to calculate measurement uncertainties and develop/improve measurement processes or solve measurement process problems.Calculates reliability of standards and field instruments.Develops and maintains automated calibration interval system based on NCSL RP-l, "Establishment and Adjustment of Calibration Intervals."Serves as MS&CL technical resource by remaining current in the newest calibration/measurement theories, equipment, methodologies, research, and specifications. This includes maintaining a technical library.Provides a quality calibration services with documentation of records and objective compliance to SPG 5330.9A, "Methodology and Calibration", SSC SLPll, SPG 5300.l.C, and ISO9001.Performs all reverse traceability data evaluation duties in compliance with TSD-MT-5300-300.Assist in directing and maintaining the laboratory policies, procedures, instructions, and plans of the Calibration Program.Acts as technical contact to other NASA centers' calibration laboratories, as well as to SSC technical monitor.Writes technical/administrative reports and conducts technical presentations. Participates and actively supports the NASA Metrology Working Group (NMWG). Acts as primary Measurement Assurance Program (MAP) contact to other NASA centers and NASA HQ.Plans, implements, and conducts MAPs as directed by NASA and the NMWG. Contributes to compilation of NASA reference publications. Secondary Duties And ResponsibilitiesAll other duties as assigned.RequirementsRequired Education and Experience:Associate DegreeEquivalent military training in a relevant discipline.Ten (10) years of direct experience with demonstrated ability.Excellent written and oral communication skills.Proficiency with computer operating systems and applications required in word processing, database, and spreadsheets i.e., Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Quattro-Pro, and Paradox.Preferred Education And ExperienceBachelor's degree in physics, metrology, mechanical or electrical engineering.Three (3) years of direct experience with demonstrated ability.
