ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST

The Invertebrate Management Program is seeking an Environmental Scientist with a background and experience in fisheries management, fisheries policy, and scientific diving.
The position will support the development of monitoring and management plans, conduct research and data analysis, assist with abalone recovery fieldwork, prepare environmental documents and regulations, and analyze legislation affecting invertebrate fisheries. Under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor),duties will include:
Assist with the management and analyses of a wide range of biological and environmental data relating to California’s recreational and commercial invertebrate fisheries.
Developing and implementing methods and techniques for resource and fishery assessments of invertebrate species and statistically analyze, interpret, and evaluate invertebrate fishery data to support fishery management.
Monitoring invertebrate resources and collecting fisheries data using a variety of survey techniques including SCUBA-based surveys, at sea collaborative fisheries research, and dock side sampling.
Assisting with public outreach efforts and dissemination of information relating to invertebrate fisheries management.
Working with stakeholders to develop innovative solutions and recommendations to improve management of invertebrate species and associated fisheries.

Working Conditions
Ability to work both in an office and field environment (ocean vessels and SCUBA diving), use standard computer equipment and lift up to 50 pounds. This position is eligible for hybrid telework consistent with current State and Department policies. Must be able to work occasional weekends. Occasional travel may be required within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e. automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include overnight stays which may be extended up to 5 days. Must have a valid driver’s license.
Only the following office locations will be considered for this position - San Pedro, Seal Beach, and San Diego.

Special Requirements
The position will require Department diver authorization. The ideal candidate should have scientific diver (AAUS equivalent) training plus experience conducting biological surveys in California kelp forests; or a recreational diving rescue diver certification with at least 50 lifetime dives in California coastal waters.
The idea candidate should have boat operator experience (MOTC preferred).
