Elementary School Principal Summary Description The Elementary School Principal works with the District Administrative Team to prepare each and every student in their school for higher education and success in the 21st century. The principal is the academic and the administrative leader of his/her school, and is responsible for communicating and supporting the vision of: <ul><li>High expectations for the achievement of all students in their building</li><li>High Quality academic programs within all classrooms in their school, including curriculum, instruction, and assessment</li><li>School support and accountability systems including supervision and evaluation of employees, planning and implementing school improvement plans, leadership, and professional development for all staff members</li><li>Shared responsibility by the entire school community(faculty, staff, students and families) for achievement of the School and District Goals</li><li>The Elementary School principal reports to the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee. </li></ul>Scope Of Responsibilities <ul><li>Vision, Mission and Goals – Guides and implements a community-wide shared vision of learning, based on SPS's vision and mission, beginning with communicating high expectations for student performance; reviews and refines vision regularly using various sources of information and continuous data analysis, and makes this vision reality through the creation and implementation of a School Improvement Plan. Promotes a positive, collegial environment which supports learning by students and staff. </li><li>Teaching and Learning – Ensures the success and achievement of all students by monitoring and continuously improving teaching and learning in their building. This includes ensuring that curriculum taught within their building align with District, Connecticut and national standards (ensuring coherence and alignment with secondary school curriculum and instruction). The principal is also responsible for directing professional learning within the building, calling upon support from the Central Office Team when necessary to provide appropriate support for staff members. Additionally the principal is responsible for leadership of the School Data Team, which monitors and evaluates student learning, using assessments and data and accountability strategies to improve achievement. Major areas must include monitoring and evaluating progress towards closing the achievement gap and overseeing Common Core State Standards implementation. </li><li>Organizational Systems and Safety – Aligns the school operations and resources to support academic programs and schools; supervises and evaluates certified and uncertified staff to guarantee the school is safe, efficient, and provides a highly effective learning environment. </li><li>Family and Stakeholders – Acts to ensure equity and access to resources and opportunities for all students and their families; collaborates with families and other stakeholders to respond to diverse community interest and needs</li><li>Ethics and Integrity – Acts ethically and with integrity; creates and sustains in their school an ethical culture committed to values, beliefs, and practices aligned with the SPS vision</li><li>Education System – Upholds and advocates for state, federal, and local policies that support excellence and equity in education </li></ul>Derived from the Connecticut School Leadership Standards Examples Of Duties And Responsibilities <ul><li>Administers and supervises the school and its regular and special education teaching staff. Directs school staff, ensuring operational effectiveness and an effective learning/working environment. </li><li>Evaluates certified staff (Assistant Principals, Teachers) and uncertified staff (Paraeducators, Office Support Staff, Security Workers, Custodians, etc.) as required by district policies. </li><li>Fosters a work environment that is student-focused and results-oriented</li><li>Participates in the recruitment, selection, placement, induction, support, of all school staff, both certified and noncertified. </li><li>Provides leadership and oversight for the School Data Teams and Professional Learning Communities to support instruction, assessment, professional development, and support programs</li><li>Coordinates the work of school staff and collaborates with district curriculum and instruction staff to develop and implement instructional practices and programs to improve student learning. </li><li>Directs the design of a school-based intervention plan to provide appropriate tiered support for student learning. </li><li>Participates in the planning of school and community events and attends whenever possible. </li><li>Monitors and directs adherence with all district, state and policies, regulations, reports, and procedures. Interprets district, state, and federal policies and laws/regulations related to elementary education to K-5 staff, students, and the community. Monitors the preparation of all required federal, state, and local reports related to their school. </li><li>Keeps well-informed about current trends in Elementary School curricula and best instructional practices and communicates trends throughout the school community. In particular, becomes knowledgeable about Common Core Curricula and standards and supports its implementation in the school and the district</li><li>Ensures the needs of English language learners and students with disabilities are met in each school; advocates for equitable resources and support to assure high achievement of all students</li><li>Assists in the development of the SPS budget and monitors the budgets for their school.
