The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 330 full-time faculty members, 460 courtesy faculty members, and over 350 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Coordinator.
**POSITION PURPOSE**
In support of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s “Opioid Overdose Prevention in Tribes: Technical Assistance through Public Health Institutes,” the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) and Seven Directions at the University of Washington (UW) are partnering to support tribal communities to increase the capacity of tribal health systems to prevent and respond to the opioid overdose epidemic. This goal will be accomplished through an enhanced technical assistance plan that includes a coordinated suite of culture-centered research, evaluation, training, policy translation and dissemination strategies. These comprise of improving data collection and epidemiologic surveillance capacity, increasing implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies grounded in respecting tribal sovereignty as well as cultural knowledge and traditions, identifying and showcasing models of tribal promising and best practices as well as designing and piloting indigenous evaluation approaches. In this project, NNPHI, UW, and CDC will collaborate to effectively and meaningfully disseminate these resources among tribal and urban Indian organization partners and other key stakeholders via diverse platforms.
The Research Coordinator (RC) works on the Seven Directions team under the general direction of the Project Lead and assists senior team members in implementing a variety of project activities, specifically providing logistical, technical and social media/communications support. The RC tasks include organization and coordination of research and project team materials and meetings, research participant recruitment, data collection and entry, IRB application, publications, dissemination efforts, grant applications, and general administration. The RC also assists with the development and facilitation of in- person or virtual community meetings, listening sessions, conference presentations, workshops, webinars, etc. This position also offers the opportunity to lead and strengthen Seven Directions external communications platforms and tools (website, social media, newsletters, listserv etc.) and serve as the primary dissemination content developer. The RC may also support in producing other project deliverables— literature reviews, manuscripts, reports, and other communication materials. The ideal candidate will be a highly organized project manager on any given team; a skilled storyteller and story listener well versed in contemporary content planning and management strategies and platforms, and bring an understanding of and humility toward AI/AN historical, contemporary, and cultural contexts.
Seven Directions works with a wide range of Tribal and Urban Indian partners, representing a wide range of social and cultural environments (e.g., urban vs. rural, Northwest vs. Plains vs. Southwest) that require cultural humility, understanding, and flexibility. The frequent telephone/video and e-mail contacts as well as occasional in-person contact with American Indian / Alaska Native communities require extraordinary tact and cultural sensitivity. This also applies to regular communication with CDC and NNPHI partners, as well as other tribal and institutional partners.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Research and Project Management Support (45%)
+ Assist Seven Directions team with coordinating opioid, substance use, mental health, or other Indigenous culture-centered research or Technical Assistance projects related to Indigenous Evaluation, Indigenous Governance, Data Sovereignty and more.
+ Support senior staff on research project design and operations, including designing phases of data collection or analysis; conducting scientific and grey literature reviews, environmental scans, organizing references in Endnote and other reference management apps; developing interview scripts, project protocols, surveys for data collection; incentive disbursement and tracking; IRB application and reporting summaries, and other assignments.
+ Support senior staff on analyzing data, developing conclusions, and presenting research results in publishable formats, including written documents, presentations, or online modules.
+ Assist with project- related communications, logistics, and technical support.
+ Develop technical assistance, training, or workshop plans or training materials participate in delivering or facilitating these interactions with partners.
+ Assist in scheduling and facilitating community of practice gatherings and our biennial Our Nations, Our Journeys conference, including support and facilitation for in-person or virtual community meetings, listening sessions, conference presentations, workshops, webinars, etc.
+ Support senior staff with conducting Focus Group and Individual interviews as well as survey data collection, entry, analysis and manuscript or report writing.
+ Assist with tracking and organizing project timelines, conferences, presentations, publications, and other items.
+ Assist with travel logistics including obtaining pre-travel authorization and reimbursement.
+ Support PI and senior staff with auxiliary project management duties as requested and anticipate additional areas for support.
+ Serve on 1-2 Seven Directions internal committees. External Communications (30%)
+ Working with Seven Directions leadership and the Communications Committee, coordinate all aspects of 7D’s Communications efforts and platforms, to include website, newsletters, flyers, listserv communications, social media channels, programs and dissemination collateral, media relations, and partnerships.
+ Support senior staff in tailoring and presenting research to a variety of audiences and in a variety of formats.
+ Manage production of 7D’s monthly newsletters including writing, editing and design.
+ Serve as point of contact for organizational inquiries and reroute inquiries as appropriate.
+ Manage 7D communication distribution lists.
+ Deploy Google Analytics or other analytics apps, storytelling, interviews, surveys, or other ways of assessing external communications reach and effectiveness.
+ Cultivate and steward story-telling and story-listening opportunities that are integral to promoting 7D and the Center’s mission, resources and visibility.
+ Assist with program-specific communications needs.
+ Identify and advocate for best practices in communications and marketing. Website and Social Media Communications (15%)
+ Manage, monitor and grow our social media presence to raise awareness of 7D research and technical assistance activities, acknowledge our partners and drive traffic to the 7D website. Develop, write, and produce social media content that positively reflects on 7D and our tribal partners.
+ Present Seven Directions’ research results in a publishable, visually appealing format to a variety of audiences.
+ Assist with reorganizing the 7D website to make it easier to navigate and find information.
+ Manage outside consultants and contractors for services, such as graphic design, video production, editing, photography, web development and support, etc.
+ Create visual and audio content, which may include shooting and editing short, informal videos for social media and/or illustrating concepts through graphic design and infographics.
+ Procure and manage website content to ensure a dynamic, accurate, and timely site for 7D.
+ Stay current with the latest social media best practices and technologies.
+ Manage 7D’s events calendar and work with internal and external partners to promote events.
+ Support the development of a medium- or long-term communications strategy. Conference and Event Support (10%)
+ Identify conference and engagement opportunities to highlight Seven Directions’ work.
+ Support senior staff in tailoring and presenting research results to a variety of audience.
+ Support event/conference planning tasks, including budget development, venue and vendor sourcing, logistics and travel, material preparation.
+ Support in the planning, writing and submission of conference grants (such as NIH R13, National Science Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, etc.).
+ Help organize and staff department meetings and events including an annual retreat, picnic, staff appreciation and staff meetings.
+ Attend conferences and trainings, with opportunities to exhibit on behalf of Seven Directions or co-present.
+ Support post-conference dissemination efforts. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Counselling, Public Health, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Public Affairs, American Indian Studies, or related field.
+ Two to three years of work related experience.
+ Familiarity with or work experience with Indigenous or other underserved populations and settings.
+ Familiarity with issues affecting American Indian and Alaska Native health, healing, cultural diversity and strengths.
+ Experience managing newsletter or social media accounts (preferably for a professional or student organization), creating original content, and coordinating content with team members or partner organizations; experience utilizing content development tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative, etc.
+ Strong written communication and facilitation skills; ability to communicate in a community-specific tone on behalf of an organization, team, or brand.
+ Experience with planning and executing conferences, meetings, webinars, or events, in-person, remotely or hybrid.
+ Excellent problem-solving, organization, relationship, and project management skills.
+ Ability to be innovative, resourceful, and creative.
+ Curiosity, enthusiasm, willingness and positive attitude towards learning new and diverse concepts, methods, tools, knowledge and data systems, community cultural contexts and solving problems.

+ Two or more years working in or on behalf of tribal nations and American Indian or Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities in both urban and rural settings.
+ Knowledgeable about substance use and disorder in general and among AI/AN.
+ Ability to conduct one-on-one interviews and facilitation of focus groups, collect quantitative and qualitative data.
+ Familiarity with literature management software packages, e.g., EndNote, Zotero, etc. and qualitative software management and analysis software packages, e.g., Dedoose, Atlas.ti etc.
+ Experience working closely as a trusted resource with communities to identify needs, define strategy, develop action plans, identify deliverables, present results, measure outcomes, and provide recommendations.
+ Knowledgeable about public health communication best practices and effective communication for different populations.
+ Experience developing and facilitating trainings for adult learners.
+ Familiarity with project management tools and/or software packages, e.g., MS Project, Smartsheet, etc.
+ Knowledge or prior experience with digital storytelling.
