- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild install, and maintain various mechanical components for locomotives (such as fuel and water pumps, control valves, governors, distributors, and windshield wiper motors using mechanics hand tools)
- Safely set up, operate, adjust and qualify mechanical devices in operation including grinders, control instruments, and other metalworking tools to make and repair parts.
- Torque crab nuts, head nuts, basket bolts, exhaust stacks, and rocker arm nuts.
- Dress locomotive cabs, such as removing and re-installing subflooring, seats, and liners.
