- The Electron Microscopy (EM) Laboratory is the branch of biology which studies the ultrastructure of cells.
- It is a laboratory within the Division of Renal Pathology (though they do work with other tissues), within the Department of Pathology.
- EM staff prepare, view, and photograph various portions of electron microscopy specimens from kidney biopsies, as well as other human tissue and cells, for diagnostic purposes, supporting the Department of Pathology in diagnostic functions pertaining to patient care.
- The Electron Microscopy Specialists process minute tissue specimens, embed them in epoxy resin embedding media, polymerize the embedded tissue, use the ultramicrotome to cut both thick ( 1 um)
- and thin (80 nm) sections, stain sections, review, and photograph specimens.
