- The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) that is master's and/or doctorally-prepared in nursing and is nationally board certified in an area of clinical expertise or specific patient population.
- Functioning as a leader, innovator, and change agent, this APRN strives to meet the needs of patient, family, health care system through coordinated efforts with interdisciplinary providers.
- In addition, this APRN assists in advancing the science of nursing practice by leading/participating in research opportunities and enhanced utilization of evidenced-base practice.
- The CNS advocates for the CNS role through education, promotion of policy change and practice enhancement at the organization, state, and national level and through publications and presentations of their contributions to the three spheres of influence (patient/family, nurse/nursing practice, and system).
