Available with the Parks Department: POSITION: Lifeguard LOCATION: Tropicanoe Cove, Castaway Bay and Vinton Pool HOURS: Seasonal – up to 40 hours/week. Includes evenings, weekends and holidays. SALARY: $15.00-$16.00/hour DESCRIPTION: Incumbent serves as Lifeguard for Lafayette Parks and Recreation responsible for ensuring the safety of swimming pool patrons. Oversees and ensures safety of swimming pool, including maintaining control of assigned area, observing swimmers and other patrons, explaining and enforcing posted rules, disciplining as needed, or notifying appropriate personnel of serious violations or persons with numerous violations. Follows assigned Emergency Action Plan procedures as needed, including rescue and emergency care, and completing incident reports as needed. Receives and responds to inquiries and complaints from patrons, including listening, investigating, and initiating action to resolve valid complaints. Assists in maintaining cleanliness of pool and related facilities, including restrooms, showers, and pool deck, such as picking up litter, emptying trash containers, sweeping/mopping floors, and pool deck, and cleaning sinks and toilets. Notifies supervisor of any hazardous conditions observed. Assists patrons with physical disabilities in getting in/out of pool as requested. Attends in-service training programs as required. All other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 15 years of age. Possession of American Red Cross CPR, first aid and lifeguard certifications, or the ability to obtain certifications. Working knowledge of and ability to apply various safety and health policies and procedures, including first aid, CPR, and bloodborne pathogens control. Ability to follow a strict code of safety in relation to job responsibilities and behavior. Ability to apply knowledge of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques. Ability to respond swiftly, rationally and decisively to emergencies, following assigned Emergency Action Plan procedures and using required equipment, such as rescue tube and mask. Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and swimming pool patrons, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions/directions, and appropriately respond to constructive criticism. Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons. Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct. Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment, and maintain appropriate, respectful inter-relationships with co-workers.
