Substitute Nurse (RN)

Primary Function: Enhance the safety and educational potential of students by carrying out necessary nursing procedures and interventions within the scope of practice for an RN in the school setting and as indicated by students' health plans and the school district's policies and procedures. Provide support to and work in partnership with the District Nurse. Understand and abide by Kittitas School District Policy, RCW/WAC related to student and school health, Washington State Nurse Practice Act. Travel to and from various district sites to provide nursing services based on changes in student health conditions and in response to district Health Services staffing requirements.Other Functions and Responsibilities:Support the District Nurse by providing nursing coverage to meet the needs of changes in student health conditions and Health Services staffing levels.Assist and communicate with the District Nurse with identifying and assessing students with health conditions. As directed, assist with the development and delivery of health care plan(s) for medically fragile students.Collect and contribute information for the creation and update of student care plans as requested by the District Nurse.Respond to specific student health care needs identified and directed by the District Nurse and through personal nursing judgment as the situation demands.Manage and deliver routine and emergency care for medically fragile students as outlined in care plans and under requirements of licensed nursing practice, DOH and OSPI guidelines, and Washington (RCW/WAC) requirements.Provide care to all students as afforded by licensure and nursing scope of practice. Report results to the District Nurse as neededApply the process of assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation when providing any type of care.Follow health care plans and perform procedures outlined therein including but not limited to administering medications, catheterizations, tube feedings, diabetes care management, trach care, and managing emergent situations.As directed by the District Nurse, consult with parents throughout the school year regarding the student's medical status, and provide information to the District Nurse.Promote self-care skills for medically fragile students. Supervise student self-care at school as specified in care plan(s). Teach self-care skills while considering students' developmental level, independent care ability, and the stability of their medical condition.Participate in data collection and reporting for projects and annual reports as requested by District Nurse.Help to coordinate and participate in health screenings, such as vision and hearing. Record the results if directed by the District Nurse. Communicate results of screenings to staff and parents as directed.Assist in the monitoring of student immunization status. Report progress to the District Nurse.Complete billing for any qualifying nursing services rendered.If requested, participate in the multidisciplinary teams and 504 processes.Perform other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications:Possess and maintain a current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license. Possess and maintain a current Washington State Driver's license and vehicle insurance.Ability to operate a computer and word processing software and to learn to operate the school district's database as well as necessary state websites and databases. Ability to maintain electronic and paper charting and medical records.Understanding of Nurse Practice Act. Competence in general nursing practice includes but is not limited to diabetic care management, tube feeding, urinary catheterization, basic trach care, universal precautions, containment of blood, and disposal of sharps.School district, public health, and community health experience preferred.Possess experience working with children that are medically fragile, medically complex, or have health concerns.Commitment to the school health program, and a desire to be a role model to and interact positively with students.Ability to communicate effectively and relate appropriately with students, parents, and staff members in a professional and positive manner.Dedication to professional growth and development.Ability to organize work independently and effectively. Ability to cooperatively, positively, and effectively work as a member of a team.Maintain a record of dependability, flexibility, and strong attendance.Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information in compliance with federal and state regulations and district policies.Expectations for Continued Employment:Employment is contingent upon passing a Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau Investigation fingerprint screening examination and background check.Demonstration of competent effort in the execution of functions and responsibilities.Maintain a consistent presence at assigned worksites and regular work hours.Comply with all District policies and operational procedures.Must maintain punctuality and regular attendance.Complete Safeschools online trainingObtain a CPR and First Aid CardPhysical DemandsThe usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following conditions:Significant: (i.e., sitting, talking, hearing, walking, vision, color vision, peripheral/depth perception, ability to adjust focus, grasping, handling paperwork, repetitive motion, use of a personal computer, looking at a computer monitor, lifting up to 10 pounds)Frequent: (i.e., standing, bending, carrying, stooping, crouching, kneeling, grasping the use of phone; use of copy machine)Occasional: (i.e., driving, lifting over 10 pounds up to 45 pounds, reaching above the shoulder, use of fax machine)
